resonator?

Somehow my resonator busted, the welds that were holding it there are completly destroyed and now i can take off the resonator no problem. The problem now is that my cars exaust is loud as hell and after it warms up the exaust vibratres/resonatos alot and if you push it past 2000rpms it sounds really crappy. My first question is how bad is this? Do i need the resonator? Another thing is that ive tried fixing it with just some cheap fixes and have had no luck, my friend says i should just replace the whole exaust but that would cost plenty of money and i dont have the funds to do that expecially considering the time of year. So is there any way i can fix it without spending a whole lot?

Re: resonator?

You don't need the resonator for the car to run good. You do need to have another resonator or a section of pipe put in there because with it gone the exhaust is getting out before it hits the muffler making it very loud.
Any place that does exhaust work should be able to do it at a nominal price. Call around and tell them what the problem is and they should be able to tell you over the phone how much it would cost. I wouldn't replace the entire exhaust system. It isn't necessary. Just that small 12-18 inch piece of pipe is all you need.

Re: Re: resonator?

This feels like a very noobish question but whats the difference if it exaust makes it to the muffler or not?

Re: resonator?

The difference is loud. The muffler muffles the sound. You won't get rid of the noise without that section of exhaust replaced so the noise is the only difference. The exhaust is not getting back to the muffler which is on the end of the system. With the resonator gone you have a good chance of getting carbon monoxide in your passenger compartment. This would be very bad.

Re: resonator?

A piece of exhaust pipe and two clamps should fix it. Watch out for that Carbon Monoxide. It will kill you!

Don't take this as an insult but it may have sounded crappy before. You just didn't hear it.

Re: resonator?

Go to Seeburg's or another exhaust shop and have them do you up a 2.25" catback exhaust with a resonator, and maybe put another muffler on it. The performance gain will be well worth the $75-$150 spent on the exhaust.

I pulled my muffler off completely, and enjoy the sound. The resonator kills a lot of the higher pitch tones that come out of the exhaust.
