Starter Location and more

Hello, could someone tell me exactly where the starter is located on a 1999 Prizm. I went to 3 different auto parts stores and NON of them had a book. I just bought a new battery and it still wont turn over. Everytime I turn the key you can hear a whinning coming from under the alternator, which leads me to believe that COULD be where the starter is. On a side note when I tried to get a jump, the car that was jumping me, his lights dimmed as did mine, but I couldnt get the car to turn over.

if it's the 1.8L engine the starter is located on the front [radiator] side of the engine under the intake manifold
