97 5.7 goes flat at 4000 RPM

Found while attempting to pass another vehicle. Stepped on the gas, transmission did down shift and engine quickly accelerated to 4000 RPM, but that was it. Won't go beyond 4000 RPM plus transmission didn't upshift until I let off of the gas, left me staring at headlights of oncoming car. Was on 200 mile trip, gas milage appears to have been very poor although also was cold out -10 to +10. 94,000 on truck. Still original fuel filter and thinking to start there. Looking for things to check out, thanks for any help.

You have a 97 with 94000 miles and you haven't changed the fuel filter?
That truck should be on at least its 3rd filter by now.

New fuel filter took care of the problem plus fuel pump whine noise level dropped dramatically. Lesson learned. Thanks for the feedback.
