EGTs - high from running really rich???

Some one just told me today that if you run really rich you can actually get really high egt's as well, but im thinking isn't the richer you run the more the excess gas absoarbs the heat and actually lowers egts? how would this work??

the ONLY thing i can think of is anti-lag system which is VERY harsh on a turbocharged system and its exhaust (only on cars that can handle it)

any ideas?

Re: EGTs - high from running really rich???

When you have fuel-rich exhaust, the extra fuel has to be burnt in the catalytic converter, creating LOTS of heat. I've seen many cars burn to the ground b/c of this. If your seeing abnormally high EGT's, you may have an injector hanging open or leaking, or possibly a faulty EGR system, just to name a few.

Re: EGTs - high from running really rich???

Usually running a touch rich will lower EGTs, but more than about 12.5:1 tends to get hotter. There is enough unused oxygen in the exhaust (and certainly enough heat) that it will continue to combust in the exhaust which will make EGTs skyrocket in some cases. But usually within normal tuning parameters it won't raise them.

Re: EGTs - high from running really rich???

apparently with diesels if you overfuel you get hotter exhaust because the fuel burns as it exits the cylender and the heat energy isnt converted into movement so it's just pure heat. this can hurt your turbocharger because it can melt the turbine wheel, it can also cause stress on the exhaust, burn your valves etc.

Beef bourito is exactly right. All that spare fuel has to finish burning somewhere.....
