Pretty beat up...

Hey, I'm 18, just started living on my own, and looking for a car. Up in CT for school and need something to get me around, and keep me occupied, too. So I found a 1972 chevelle ss, with a 454 or 396, dunno which, but its pretty beat up. Its hard to imagine how it got that bad. But the paint is shot, rust on both bumpers, interior is pretty rough, engine is in disrepair, but runs well enough, just needs some maintainence... But its a 72 ss chevelle either way... what do you guys think? would it be worth it? how worth it? I'll get more info if i can. thanks.

It all comes down to time and money. Do you have the time to do the work? Do you have the money to pay someone else to do the work?

Yea, acctually I'm looking at this car because I have way too much free time up here, and want something to do. With more than 10 hours of nothing each day and a whole weekends of nothing, a beater would be a great project.

Go for it but expect to do a total frame off rebuild.

Re: Pretty beat up...

Good choice.... I'd say go for it too.

It is kind of important that you ID the engine as a 396 [402] or a 454 -- generally they're both more expensive to build than a small block, and the 454 is a much rarer piece for '72.

A '70s car is a great project because it should be exempt from emissions (sniffer) testing [in NY it is exempt after 20 years or so] -- Means you can make internal engine mods without fear -- the 72 big blocks are choked up with bad heads with small ports, a low compresion ratio, and a mild, economy cam.

How worth it? is for you to decide.

Re: Pretty beat up...

Hmmmm, Let's review.
18, just moved out of the house, money has to be either, tight, or a concern........I'd say pass on this one and give me the guys number...

Kidding of course.
It all depends on what you know about all of this. Is this gonna be your only mode of transportation? If so when you got the wheels off and forgot the wheel clyinders at the parts house are you going to be able to get there now???
How much do you have budgeted?
How beat up IS the car?
Are you SURE it's true SS if in fact it is being sold as such? (easy to fake)
There are many sites on the net to help you get info on chevelle's and fixing them up.

Anyway not trying to talk you out of anything, just shining the light form a different angle...

Good luck Bro....
