Broken spark plug

While changing a spark plug, one broke completely off with the thread still in block. 4.3l v-6

What can be done to remove it?

Re: Broken spark plug

Never seen or heard of that happening before.

I would try pulling the center out with a needle nose vice grips or something.
Then see if you can use an easy out in the hole that you should have there

Good Luck man, you need it.

Are you saying just the top white porcelain top broke off? If so just continue removing it like normal. As long as your plug socket can fit, you can back it out.

Re: Broken spark plug

I kinda hope that's where it broke LT, but for some reason I think that it must be worst than that.

If you can't get it out with the easy out go talk to either a body man or a top notch welder about using a plasma cutter to take it out. Or they might be able to weld a nut on the broken plug.

They might not be able to do anything, but you never know without asking.

If none of this works then your stuck pulling the head.
If it isn't on the motor you should be able to get the plug drilled out.
But if you drill it out with the head on you'll have lots of little filings in your cylinder without any way to get them out.

If the nut portion broke off from the threads, you will need to use an easyout to remove it (kinda like a reverse thread tap)

If the easy out doesn't work then you will have to drill and retap the hole

Re: Broken spark plug

If the nut portion is gone then also you should remember to use anti-seize on the plug threads so this NEVER happens again.

Re: Broken spark plug

I would not recommend using an easy out.. I've seen them do more harm than good a few times. My last experience with one showed that they are made with the finest of japanese hardened cheese.

Try getting yourself a super out. It's something you pound in and turn as opposed to the reverse thread.

Here is what came out with the socket

Here is what was left in the head

I let my mechanic get it out. Didn't want to F it up any more. Well, The money I save with the DIY tuneup went to get this out. He used some heat and an ez-out.

Damn emmision tests.

I did use antiseize the last time I changed them. Oh, well.

It sure was. I don't drive the truck that much so I hadn't changed them in about 4 years. I guess I will have to change them more often.

Re: Broken spark plug

I think you might have coolant getting into that cylinder.

I saw this on another forum about a week ago. Just for the heck of it what brand plugs are these?? I have never seen plugs break like this before. To your knowledge, was any anti seize used on them?

He said there was but by looking at the rust, I think a coolant issue has raised its head.
