Chalk another up for the Saturn

It was a dark and stormy night...

haha jk. I was at my friends house, bored, looking for something to do when we hop into my car and decide to just drive around until the rest of our crew of flunkies gets done with dinner. Wandering around aimlessly, we notice a 5th gen Prelude a few cars in front of us. I had always wanted to race one of these, even tho i was pretty sure i would lose, so I get past the traffic blocking me from him and as luck would have it, the light up ahead goes yellow...

We pull up and look to our right, and its 2 guys, looked late teens. I smile and nod, and the drive smiles back. I wait for the light to turn green, and i raise the rpms up a little. It hits green and we both gun it, with me taking a one car lead pretty early. I add a half length to that by 80, and then drop back to the speed limit.

I was pretty impressed by that win, didnt actually think the victory would be claimed by me, but i was pleasantly surprised.

After that we saw a caprice classic on friggin 30's, the guy had to cut away the body to make room, and the car was riding as high as SUV's. And then a bright yellow Geo Storm tried to flyby at 50, I dont think i have to say who won that.

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Good win!

Is that the H22A prelude? Are they mid 15s cars? Because I saw a stock one run a 15.6@92 but may be a crappy driver. What's your estimate for your car?

Why so many questions, my friend has one and I need to know how hard I need to launch to beat one. See, the problem with racing a WRX is you have to take into account how important it is to win vs the life you're taking off the tranny, hahahaha

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Are they? What do you mean by beasty? They're so damn heavy!

I know a lot people on this forum have a high regard for the prelude and its handling but come on, it's FWD! Saying it's got great handling for a FWD car is like saying "damn, you're pretty smart for a retarded kid"

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

...... beasty for a 2.2 liter engine, i mean i've been given a run for my money against one from a roll, though i doubt it'd have much of a chance from a dig

i never said it could handle...??

oh and "rob" you i dont believe you'd even need to launch, just tell him to go and when you feel like it take off

Oh ok, yeah i spose for a 2.2L NA it's quite good.

Not you personally (that was more of a general statement), but a lot of people say the prelude handles good but there's always the "for a FWD".

I personally have a lot of doubts now about the handling, cos this friend was going around a shallow bend, as he describes it, at 90mph except this bend was at the top of the hill. So as he's going through the bend and down the other side of the hill, his car starts to OVERsteer. He tries to correct this by countersteering (is this even the right way in a FWD car?) and ends up making the car's ass kick out the opposite way and do 3 360 degree spins before coming to a stop. This was all from cruising around a shallow bend at 90 on a 70 road - granted yes the hill had a part to play in it. Lucky bastard though he didn't get a single scratch.

hahahaha, hopefully I will be able to do that. I'd have to, given the amount of Honda jokes I make (not cos i hate Honda, but cos they're so easy to make).

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Well everyone I know says my friend's prelude is a heavy slow piece of crap. The H22A may be a powerful engine, but put into that thing it may not be that great. I've never been in it when he's pushed it, but I checked out the engine bay once and that bonnet is FRIGGIN heavy. No wonder Honda owners like carbon fibre.

I don't know if we're talking about the same Prelude, my friend's one is a 2001 Prelude VTi-R which is our badging for the H22A version, but I checked the specs and it's almost as heavy as my car, and mine is AWD.

I find it very believable he pulled on it.

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

nice kill on the lude those are pretty quick even more so in a hatch....but they are heavy....as for right__lirr you should be able to beat him without launching....I dont think the 5000rpm launch is worth a race with lude......but its up to you...

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Yeah, I think a 2.5-3K rpm launch should do it....as long as I never have to see 4th, I'll be fine

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Yeah the prelude weighs a good 500lbs or so more than my car

I've seen that with high rpm launches, WRX's can get low 14's, but what cars are they comparable with from a roll?

Re: Chalk another up for the Saturn

Prelude may have been autotragic. A dude at work here has a Prelude Vtec auto with mods and he says it's slow, but I think he just wants to shark me into a race. I don't see how a Saturn could pull on a h22 5-speed unless the driver sucked and shifted pre-vtec...

Toyota Camry? WRX is pretty slow from a roll and will ge beaten by most things RWD or FWD in its bhp range.
