AWD 4WD to 2WD

The last few times I have used 4 wheel I noticed somm quirky.
First, it seems to go better in the mud/snow when useing the Full Time (AWD) not the Part Time (4WD) setting. They seem to act back asswards. Lemme clarify, 98 D with manual shift transfer case.
Then after driving in Full Time 4wd and shifting on-the-fly back to 2wd, the AWD does not disengage. I know this from the bucking action you get when turning sharp. Acts like the front hubs are locked in Part Time 4wd. The only remedy I have found is to put it in reverse for about 3 revolutions of the tires. Hmmm, just like the old days.
Am I missing something? I thought shift on the fly meant just that. Same as the old Blazer. Or is something not right?

I have a 99 with the manual transfer case. 2wd, 4hi and 4lo. when I pull it into 4wd it engages right away but it does take some time to disengage when I put it back into two wheel drive. Lets say for example that I am going slow in 4hi and I put it in 2wd to make a sharp turn into a parking space or something like that it will still be engaged unless I back up first. This is the nature of the beast. in a straight line at normal driving speed mine take's a few car lengths to disengage when I put it back into 2wd. you must have a different case than I do. Do you have a differental in your case that allows you to run awd 4wheel lock and 2wd? The full time awd transfer cases have a differential and are always in awd and you can select 4 wheel lock hi or low with the puch buttons. does yours do all that with the maunual selector? just curious about the different types of transfer cases offered over the years.

No, it's a manual transfer case with 2hi, part time(4WD), full time(AWD) and 4lo. The shift lever goes from 2WD through 4WD to get to AWD. Then to get into 4lo you must stop the vehicle, put it in neutral, then kick the shift lever to the right and down. Not sure about being in neutral, park may work too. Just an old habit.
I was back on the mountain last weekend and it seems like when I shift it back into 2WD from AWD it gets stuck in 4WD until I do the reverse trick. I drove probly 20 miles and on curvey highway roads I could feel the buck. So I slip it back into AWD til there is a chance to do the reverse thing. here is a pic of the shift lever. You can kinda see the 4 settings. And please forgive the mess.
Does or has anybody else have the symptoms? And of course, what was the fix?
