93 wrangler, clutch problem?

first off, i'm by no means a mechanic, just tryin' to find what help i can.

problem occurred pretty suddenly last night, I was having a lot of trouble shifting gears when the jeep was started. it would not let me put into 1st through 5th at all, and it would grind like it does when you try to switch into reverse while moving forward, except when I was not moving. It still allowed me to switch gears fine if the jeep was off though. Well, I went out to it this morning, and it let me start it up, but unless I was holding the brakes, the jeep would jump off, almost like when you let off the clutch a little when it's in gear. So I tried turning it off, and starting it back up, and the same problem occurred in all gears, including reverse. The only time it would let me start it up after that was if it was in neutral. Otherwise it would just jump off when I tried to start it in gear as if I wasn't holding the clutch all the way down. Is this a quick fix, or is this a teardown? Any advice is hugely appreciated.

Re: 93 wrangler, clutch problem?

Welcome to AF

Your clutch probably has hydraulic problems. Check the fluid level in the reservoir under the hood next the the brake master cylinder. It uses brake fluid but if it is empty, there is likely other problems. It will show leaks where it mounts to the fire wall, in a line to the transmission housing or in the slave cylinder inside the clutch housing.

If it is the slave cylinder, you will need to pull the transmission and do what needs to be done........

Thanks for the welcome.

I didn't see any fluid in there, as shallow as it was. I also didn't see any kind of leak, either though, although I wasn't really sure what I was looking for. I'm not entirely sure where the things you mentioned are. Is this something that can be held over by adding more transmission fluid until I can get the time and money needed to fix this appropriately, or will it hurt the problem more to run it? I mean, if it's a leak, I can add the fluid as necessary, but I just don't know.

The clutch master cylinder is under the hood on the drivers side. It is bolted to the fire wall right ahead and above of where the clutch pedal is.

It is not the transmission fluid that is leaking but the brake fluid that operates in the clutch hydraulic system. Use only brake fluid to fill the reservoir on the fire wall.

It would be a good idea for you to get a service manual of some type. Haynes or Chilton are good for general maintenance and you can get them at most auto parts stores.
