TEST: Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI

Hi!

I've tested the Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI, and you can read all about it here: (in norwegian, but still 87 pictures to look at!)

Superb's are very cool cars indeed- better than the Passat for sure- much more room, better suspension and even better equipped for the dollar

Not better looking, IMO. I’d still go for the Passat. Call if badge snobbery if you like, it is partly that

I thought it is a stretched Passat...similar in length and chassis to the Chinese long-wheelbase Passat. The Superb has more back seat room.

Some of the features available on the Superb are really nice, and I am surprised they are not available on the Passat GLX or W8 models, such as: the front passenger seat with the footrest pass-through for back seat passengers, indirect lighting in the door handles, controllable air conditioning vents for the rear seat passengers, Storage space fo rumbrella w/drainage in the left rear door, heated rear seats, climate controlled center console storage box and slide out storage drawer, outside mirror puddle lights, and flip-down retractable hanging hooks for shopping bags in the trunk!

Pretty nifty. Heck, I'll say it...Skodas ARE pretty cool! They've come a long way, baby (as you said, they are all just VWs in disguise and for less money). Wait until their new WRC car starts scoring top-5 results...that should buy them some more 'rep' with those that still remember the old eastern-European Skodas from behind the iron curtain!

Once I saw the Octavia RS I was convinced that it is goodbye Skodas of old It is very rare that I say anything has me more smitten than my Alfa :o My mum recently acquired an Octavia 2.0 liftback (The base model Octavia in NZ) she likes it better than her 7th Gen Civic hatch- which in it's own right was a poorly screwed together piece of crap

The old mans at odds between a Superb V6 and a Passat V6- I keep telling him go for the Superb- but looks like badge snobbery will win him over

The current Skodas are good cars since the Octavia, Fabia and Superb are made. The previous Skoda were of course not the best cars in the world (except the first before the Second Wold War) of course ! and their image is often associated to this old image. But it's changing.
The only problem now witrh Skoda is that this make is too close from VW (design, engines, etc.).
But they'll surely take more independance and make cars more funny and different

Ill post this here

Since there is no Skoda Forum, I just wanted to post this here.

I bought a Fabia 1.4 75 BHP 16v auto notchback. It's a nice car but is the 1.4 16v engine the same as the 100BHP version. If so why the hell Didnt they put the 2.0 or 1.416v 100BHP version to it. It's so F'kin slow. 0-60 in 17.3 and a top of 103 Is taking the P'ss. I mean 93lbs/ft of torq isnt so bad in a car of that size yet still it's so slow. I know autos are slower but it is niceley tuned and Is computerized (Based on Fuzzy Logic)and is allways willing to hit the red line for you, but why so slow!. Can anyone tell me why skoda would do this, and what i can do to make it go faster. I am actually 46 and have 3 kids. I am not a speedfreak but it struggles even in everyday driving. I have has suggestions of better air filter, Tuning Chips e.t.c, Do you have any suggestions?

P.S what is Clutch Lock, It does it in 3rd and fourth gear, Is this engine braking?

Skodas are damned nice cars indeed- however it seems nobody here seems to think so- since March '03 only 70-odd cars have been shifted (By contrast VW has shifted about 950 Year to Date)- most of them Superbs and Octavias- the Fabia is pretty unpopular- mainly due to the lack of an Auto transmission option until recently- then again there was only two dealers- both in Auckland until a month or two ago- they now have them in Hamilton and Christchurch- so maybe sales might pick up

Skoda stills suffers from an image problem. Where it doesnt sell well, i think its because VW has priced Skoda models too high. Why get a Skoda when for an extra thousand you can get the equivalent VW, which has a better badge and holds its value better... a brand cant be turned around that quickly
