Unhappy Speedometer not working

My lude is an '85, 5speed with about 223k on the odometer. For about the past 6 months now my speedometer has been cutting out randomly and just sitting at 0. Sometimes it will kindof sputter around the actual speed or jump around from 0 to the actual speed. Sometiems when I really am going 0, it will jump around between 0 and 40.

My original thought was that the wire was loose but my uncle suggested to me that the cable could actually just be fried from being heated up and cooled down again and again over the course of the car's 223k miles. Id appreciate any help, thanks!
