3, 2, 1, No ignition!

1999 Chev Lumina 3100, base sedan
83,000 miles

This is the second time it happened, both times after I previously drove the car the same day. This happened instantly after I shut the car off, I went to start it back up and nothing.

What happens, is at the point where the starter should engage, I hear a click, and the Brake light illuminates in the instrument panel. I've never noticed if Brake came up whenever you start the car anyway, but that's all I get. Radio goes off, Brake comes on, and click.

Last time I happened, I pulled all the fuses from the passenger side and checked them, they're all fine, put them back and it fired right up. I guess it was just a coincidence that it happened.

Any clue what this could be?

Re: 3, 2, 1, No ignition!

i had similar problems with my '97.

come to find out - it was my key. i have the little black square thingy on it, and it was worn out.

i fortuneatly had a spare key - I use that now, and never had a problem since.

one time - I drove it into work fine. when i went to leave, nothing, all the bells and whistles worked, just never turned over.

i went inside to ask my buddy to give me a jump - got back out there, and the dumb thing fired up.

buddy of mine said it was my key, and like i said, i now use the spare, and the problem hasnt happened in almost 1 year

Re: 3, 2, 1, No ignition!

My starter's acting up again since it got cold last night. Went out and got nothing but relay click.

Gave the starter a good whack with a hammer, fired right up. guess I can't hold out any longer....starter time.
