HUD Removal

Im getting frustrated with my HUD from fading. I have some mechanical skills but not a lot. How hard is it to remove that big chunk of plastic where it is? Is there little plastic clips underneath the windshield too that hold it down? Im thinking about taking a screwdriver and start prying away. Is it difficult to put it back together too? Also can I get a close up of the circuit board so I know what to solder together and not fry the whole thing.

The last time I took and part of the dash apart was in my 99 GT and that didnt want to go back together in a few spots. Any help would be great.

Oh and the guy who owned it before i did had it replaced once already. So is there going to be a warranty on that part even though the cars warranty is up? Its got 82000 miles on it. How much is an extended warranty on it?

Re: HUD Removal

Try this, but in reverse;

What are you going to do with that big hole in your dash?
Send it to me when you get it out. Would love to mess with it.
Thanks

Re: HUD Removal

This fix should take care of your fading problem

1. Remove HUD from car.
2. Remove 4 Torix screws from top of HUD
3. Remove ribbon cable and small 2-wire cable from circuit board.
4. Remove circuit board.
5. On the board there is a small photocell, the problem is that the cell has a cold solder joint. The cell is a 1/3-inch
Circle with a black square in the center. All you need to do is resolder the two legs.
6. Put everything back.

I was unable to find a replacement cell at radio shack.
The cell produces a small amount of voltage. The more light the more voltage. 0-.75 volts. My cell was working fine but the joint was loose. When the board heated up it lost the joint increased resistance to the point that the HUD lost the voltage reference.Hope this helps....~Larry~

I read them already. But is it going to go back together all nice? Or am i going to loose all them plastic tabs in the process of taking it out?
My friend has a tool that takes apart dashes. Would that be better than a screwdriver? My big concern is that am i going to break something getting it out and is it going to look good and stay secure when it gets back together. How long does it take to get it apart, fix it and get it back together again?

Actually, you dont need any tools. I took mine apart by hand. I did cut myself but that part of the fun. And the clips are metal not plastic. They should stay stuck to the plastic piece when you pull it off but I lost one right next to the alarm LED. It fell into the vent. All the others clipped back in no problem. And it looks like it did when it was new. And the HUD works!

This thread may help. It discusses how to remove the dash panel that blocks your way to the gauges.

Anyone,
I have some questions....
I removed the HUD and board and the posts seem to be solid. I put a tester on it, put a strong flashlight on the photocell, and it only produced a voltage reading of .44 at the peak. It did go up from .24, but nowhere near the .75 BIG-L mentioned. Have any ideas on what could be wrong? The problem I'm having is the HUD only works intermittently. Sometimes it is clear as can be, then it won’t work for like 2 weeks. More off than on of course. Now that I have it all apart, I REALLY want to get this fixed. Any ideas or suggestions??? Do I just need a new cell? Is it even possible to find one? Or would I need a whole new board, and then where do I find one? I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide. Thanks…Cole

BigL; mine does work at all, could it be that the photocell is completly loose?

Cool Re: Re: Re: HUD Removal

Do you need any tools to remove the "bump" on the dash to access the HUD ?

Useful URL below......
