93 3KGT-SL turn signal problem
Never had to repair this, so looking for any advice. When engaging the right turn signal on the steering column, dashboard turn signal flashes very fast, approx 2-3x faster than normal. Exterior turn signals don't flash at all (neither front nor rear). I'm suspecting the problem is the control module mounted inside the rear quarter panel (accessible from inside the trunk) - there's one on each side of the car. Turns out this is an expensive part from dealer ($250), so before ordering or searching a junkyard I'm wondering if anyone else has ever seen this problem, and if this is the right fix. Thanks!

every time i have seen a blinker on the dash or in the signal flashing too fast, it's because the wrong bulb was in it or because a bulb was dead. check your bulb, that's the cheapest advice i can give.

Good basic suggestion, I'll try that first. But another question for you or anyone who's ever tried to change a rear turn signal bulb on this car: how does one get at the bulb - through the lens cover, or the inside? There are no exterior screws, nor is the bulb accessible from the interior, even with the removable panels taken out. I've prid all over that thing and short of removing the entire lens assembly, it's not obvious - it's very frustrating! I even called my local Mitsubishi dealership where I bought the car 12 years ago, and they didn't know without consulting their manuals (which they weren't inclined to do with me on the phone). The front lens assembly has exterior screws, so the bulb is easily replaceable - the rear is not so obvious. Any advice on the bulb change is appreciated!

Two nuts hold the taillight in. Remove those, pull the taillight and you can see the bulbs.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions - I'll try in the daylight tomorrow, I don't trust myself in artificial light. I'll let you know how it works out. And yup, I've owned this car since Feb 1993, brand new, and it's still a beauty. My wife mostly drove it, we took good care of it, got plenty of use (now 127K mi), and even sat it garaged for 2 years to wait for our oldest to reach driving age, now he drives it, and is very good with it (thank God). Still a head-turning car!

Deagle50ae and Stealthee - you were both right. The problem was simply bad bulbs, in both front and rear - the high speed console flashing threw me off, esp with both bulbs going near the same time. Two bulbs obviously a lot less expensive than a control module.
As for the rear access, Stealthee, you were right on - as you said: "two nuts hold the taillight in. Remove those, pull the taillight and you can see the bulbs". Very simple once you made the suggestion. I've got it all fixed, and appreciate the help and advice from both of you! |
