Whoa!!! No Brakes!! Watch out!!

I had brakes. Parked my Blazer. Went into Resturaunt to pick up pizza. Drove half way home. Suddenly stopping for a red light no stoppie. Went right thru it!!!!. Just kinda went real slow rest of the way home using L1 and L2. Now heres the thing, Pedal is hard. Doesn't grab until totally to the floor. But when I push the pedal it make a shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sound?? Whats up with that. Im gonna check lines 2maro. but could it be dirt and caked mud? went 4wheelin 2 days ago got pretty deep in some thick stuff.

You know after putting the truck back together after replacing the manifold gasket. I had a weird feeling I forgot to hook something back up. Maybe thats my problem. The brake booster vacuum assist line comes out of the firewall. To the manifold, right? I'll get right on it. 2mar0

Re: Whoa!!! No Brakes!! Watch out!!

Sounds to me like you may have broken a brake line , or cracked one and it failed later . IS your brake light staying on in the dash ? If so , It would indicate you have an unbalanced brake fluid flow . Do you mean very hard pedal to feel any stopping power or does it go to the floor real easy and no slowing down . Two different causes . You could get the ssssshhhhh sound if the pedal goes to the floor because of the amount of air moving out of the power brake booster . If you did not connect the vac line , the engine would rev real high or rough . Rob

Hard brake wouldn't indicate a broken line... More than likely it's the vac... The brake booster is the big round thing attached to the master cylinder (where you put in your brake fluid) From there a large hose (1/2" inner diameter, 3/4" outer) runs to the back of your intake... Make sure it's attached properly and no cracks and dry-rot...

Ok, it's10:30 . 4 hrs from when I started the brakes. checked the vacume line from the booster to the maifold. looked good. figured out where the last rubber ring went from the new gasket kit. (on the end of the fitting for that hose). jacked up the truck set it on stands. took off the wheels. removed the calipers. then shoes from that. cement like dried mud everywhere. got a hose and a brush. high pressured the hell out of anything brake related. a little dish soap. sparkling brake parts end result. brake kleened the hell out of everything. 2 cans. compressed the pistons. re-assembled both sides. replaced wheels. dropped jacks. started up put in reverse. HARD FOOKIN PEDAL!! DIDNT STOP . ONLY WHEN I PUSHED REALHARD. SAME "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" SOUND. SAME HARD PEDAL. oh and i put that "brake quiet " on. and boy were they quiet. lol. any other vacuum lines i should check. I know a little bit about brakes. and I'm stumped. Any suggestions will be much appriciated.

p.s.
i cleaned everything cause i thought the mud was sticking everything together. and the pistons seemed to move free'er after they were cleaned.

Re: Whoa!!! No Brakes!! Watch out!!

Ah, sounds like your brake booster is gone, you will have to replace it.

Re: Whoa!!! No Brakes!! Watch out!!

start the moter and listen for a vaccume leak, use that break parts cleaner, spray the booster on the edge, listen for the idel to change (take the sencor off the intake) and the cheepest fix is KEEP IT ON THE ROAD GIRL lol but the most logical thing right now is the booster, no break assest = hard breaking, loss of power breaks...

After you check the vacuum lines and don't find a leak, I'd say you problem was the brake booster. Mine made a loud sound like air brakes on an 18 wheeler. Sound stayed no matter how long I had the pedal pressed. Wasn't the quick little hiss you get from normal opperating brakes.
