best gas milage possible

i know that the 88 hf crx is the best for gas mileage. if you were to change out all parts you could to carbon fiber like hood, quarter panels etc,and made the engine as spec as possible, could you get 60+mpg. Would headers cai and exahuast help or hurt. it's just an idea. i proabaly wont do it un less i get the funds but what is everythning you could do to get the max mpg?

Unless you use real 100% carbon fiber it won't do any good. Most places use fiberglass and a top layer of carbon fiber. On large parts like hood and hatch it might make a little weight difference, but on smaller parts it won't. Also having the engine to honda specs would help alot.

so most of the carbon fiber parts i see are just fiberglass? thats crap. how much would a real carbon hood cost?

Actually, all the hoods Ive seen (including mine) have a fiberglass frame on them... Fiberglass is stronger than carbon fiber, and can be worked in ways CF cant... Which is why its used as the frame... Plus its not much heavier... My hood is about 20 lbs lighter than my stock metal hood... Will this save gas mileage? Probably not by much...

i know that just a carbon fiber hood wont save gas but my freind once told me not to look for one place to lose 600 lbs but to look for 600 places to lose one pound. every little bit helps. for the engine, what mods, if any, would help fuel economy?

Yeah thats why they make fighter jets, F1 cars, and high end sports cars out of fiberglass....

Carbon fiber is a lot stronger than fiberglass. The reason they used it as a frame on your hood is to be cheap. A 100% real carbon fiber hood will cost you about $1200.

Actually some are... They use CF, fiberglass, as well as graphite and boron fibers... True CF is used more tho... And true all the others are cheaper... But my point still stands, hoods made out of a fiberglass frame are still MUCH lighter than OEM... And where do you get $1200 for a 100% CF hood? ViS hoods go for about $400... And they use a "strong carbon fiber skeleton."...

there are a few places that sell real carbon fiber hoods, most hoods are fiberglass/carbon fiber. it would cost 1200, more around 700

as far as getting your engine to specs. the best thing to do is a rebuild of the motor or an overhaul if you are scraping for money. i did an overhaul on my 89 civic lx. cost me a little over $100( head gasket, piston rings, rod bearings) i do deliveries with my car and after the overhaul i went for about 29 mpg to about 34 to 35 mpg. not to mention how much better my car ran. i do have to metion my car burned oil like hell, so you may not have such dramatic results because you may have pretty good compression already. i also put a header on and that helped for 1 to 2 mpg, plus the power when she hits 3000 rpm it really helps

Like I said originally, I have yet too see a hood that dosnt have fiberglass as the skeleton... I didnt think the ViS's where either, until I read that and they said "Each hood is built with a strong carbon fiber skeleton.", I honestly didnt read any furthur... But basically they are contradicting themselves in that one paragraph by saying they are, and then again saying they arent... So I dunno... I would like to know who does make 100% carbon fiber hoods, cuz I still havnt seen any... Seibon perhaps? ViS and Seibon are, too my knowledge the largest manufacturers of CF hoods... If they dont make them, who does?

But eitherway, my main point still stands... The CF hood (100% CF or not) are still MUCH lighter than OEM... I should know, I just put an OEM hood back on my car today and took off the CF one... (JDM front end conversion) The CF hood I could lift myself, and bolt it up (did it twice once when I installed it, and once when I did my engine swap)... The OEM hood, I had to have someone hold it while I bolted it up... Other than that, theres an obvious difference in weight...
