exhaust questions
so ive finally buckled down and decided to get a new muffler on my 91 3.1 and i've got a couple questions for you guys. I'm thinking about getting like a flowmaster, just cos that would be cool. If i'm gonna replace it, then why not go a little further and make it sound awesome. so if i was to get a flowmaster, then what size is the inlet piping? and which magnaflow model would work best on my car? i was thinking the delta 40 since its quiet in the car and like to hear my music. or are there any less expensive alternatives to magnaflow that give the same features?
thanks guys! |

Re: exhaust questions
Check Summit Racing's website. They have a number of alternative makes that are similar to FM's stuff.
A parts store should be able to look up your car in the exhaust reference book and tell you what size the pipes are at each point. Has it been replaced before, or OEM? You can wrap a string around it, measure the length, divide by 3.14 and that'll give you your outside diameter.

muffler replaced
so i ordered a muffler from summit. i just got a regular summit chamber muffler. its a great replacement for the OE muffler. i had to go to autozone to get the right clamps, fittings, and a tip to direct the gases away from the plastic bumper cover. if i didnt point it out, i dont think you would notice it, except i painted it with silver high heat pain just for good measure and hopefully this one wont get all corroded like the last one. one thing i love about this muffler is the sound. i knew it was gonna sound better than the stock one, but i get a bunch of compliments on the sound by my friends. my brother told me that it sounded like a boat, haha. when i hear that, i just think of a big house boat with 2 high displacement mercury engines, haha. and this thing packs on the power in the higher rpm ranges. today i kept punching it to get that feeling and every time it ran out first or second gear i kept thinking, man this thing REALLY pulls!

Maybe I'll do that too. I'm gonna need one anyway...Now you can bust out some 1-1/2" holes in the airbox with a holesaw like I did, and be really barkin' from both ends

I'd stay away. I just used a K+N panel filter and perforated the stock box, and the results are noticeable. I put a hole in either side, and one in the bottom. Without a ported intake and a larger throttle body, I doubt mine could flow much more air than it currently is.

Re: exhaust questions
so instead of converting to a cai, i can just bore some holes in the intake filter box? i currently have the drop in k&n filter. 93 eurosport 3.1 4 door. also i have recently replace my bad catylic converter with a universal converter. now i would like to install a new muffler. the pipes are good however i want a muffler that is going to enhance the sound of the car. are there any suggestions as to what brand/model? can i just use clamps to install the muffler or should i get it welded? i would like to stay below $100.00. thank you, all input is highly appreciated. also are there any mufflers that would improve the flow of things from the engine with out have to replace the headers and the catylic converter?

Re: Re: exhaust questions
do what i did. just get one from summit, its like $40. it was part number SUM-633220. its the one with the offset inlet and the center outlet, like the OE muffler. my old muffler rusted off so i didnt need to get it off, just unbolt it. im guessing you dont have that convinience, haha. and i just put mine on with an exhaust connector and 2 exhaust clamps. i dont know what size connector you need exactly, because the one i got didnt fit well on the other side, so i cut slits down the side and clamped the exhaust clamp down tight so it would bend the connector on the pipe and get it on there real tight. i also needed one of those end pieces that would derect the exhaust gases coming out the end of the muffler away from your car and put that on with an exhaust clamp. when i put all that on, i made brackets to hold the muffler to the old hangars. i used 16 gauge angle iron and did some bending and cutting and screwing and drilling. and then bolted the dealies on im sure i could get pictures of you needed them

I used a 1-1/2" hole saw on a drill, you can get them for almost nothing at the hardware store if you don't have one. I knocked out three holes, one in the bottom of the box toward the front, one on each side. Take the box out before drilling into the bottom, the A/C reciever and lines are right under it. I used to have a pic where you can see the holes, I'll try to find it for ya'

Re: exhaust questions
couldnt u just do the top of the thing instead of the bottom?
i couldnt figure out how to get the whole box out, just the top lol couldnt u just remove the whole box and replace it with like a cone filter? wouldnt that have teh same effect? and this is my engine pic http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...951_7_full.jpg and the big black thing next to the windsheild washer fluid reservoir on the right (the big black thing to the left of it) is the box right?
