Would it be practical to?...

I'm looking at a 1993 RX-7 with 87,000 miles. I basically know nothing of how the rotary engine works. I've been looking over these threads and it seems that RX-7's require alot of work. Would it be practical to purchase an RX-7 as a daily driver?

Re: Would it be practical to?...

if by practical you mean reliable, i would really think about other options. if you buy any 93 model car you are running a risk of having to spend a lot of money. but in my opinion you have a higher risk with an rx7. if you like the mazda line, go for a protege or a miata... those are the two best cars mazda makes. IMO of course

Re: Would it be practical to?...

Practical no, fun yes.

With a rotary you need to b e very involved with the vehicle. Always monitor the water temops, oil temps, oressures ect ect.
If you want to constantly be involoved with the vehicle and possible repair the car on a more often basis than a regular vehicle.
The cost of owning one is quite high. So ya, if you have the money and time to deal with one then i say go for it, but be prepared for the worst.

Even NA's require attention, not as much but they still need more care than your average car.

Re: Would it be practical to?...

Your buying someone elses abused car. 87K miles is not bad for that year car and could be considered low.

My dad bought a 1993 RX-7 with a blown motor. (smart move in my book) and replaced the motor with a Factory reman. (I would have chose a reputable engine builder)

A factory reman will you you around $2500 plus labor for swap usually $1200 for that. Whereas a good rotary engine builder will charge you about $4500 for a good rebuild with a mild street port, that will incluse pulling and reinstalling the engine. A street port will help the engine to breath better and give you a little more power.

A competent rotary mechanic should be able to point out maintenance issues and parts prone to wear and tear that will need attention.

My dad daily drives his FD and has problem free for 4 years now. His initial investment has paid off in the lond run. You can spend it all up front and be done with it or spend it a little at a time a time and get frustrated.

My 400RWHP FC has been running problem free for 3 years now. I only change the oil every 2000 miles, change the spark plugs twice a year, change the fuel filter once a year and clean the air cleaner when it needs it. I do not daily drive my car but it gets driven at least twice a week then tracked on open tracks and Autocrossed. Problem free.

i have a 87 base model that i used to drive until i cooked the motor (on purpose), and i have all the parts needed to do a turbo swap into it.

im getting a 90 gxl as soon as i sell my 240sx (might put my turbo stuff into the 90)

i have alot of posts because ive been here since 03, i come here regularly. there are people who've been here a shorter time and have more posts than me
