87 caravan starting issues

My friend has a 87 caravan v6.. the van has hesitation starting up somedays and somedays its fine. most of the time tho he has to keep trying to turn it over and after a minute of cranking (he cranks for 10seconds and lets it rest for about 15secs) eventually starts up. and wierd enuff sumtimes when it doesnt start and he turns the key back to the off position the starter stays engaged for 5 seconds. when the van is started it runs fine and everythings smooth. i would appreciate any help i can get... thanks

Hello there I used to have ans 87 Plymouth Voyager with the V6 motor.
I have found that moisture likes to accumulate in the distributor cap so what I did when I changed all the plugs, wires, rotor and cap on mine was I put a small bead of gasket silicone on the bottom of the new cap before mounting it to the motor. If that don't fix the problem then maybe your friend may want to try changing the ignition coil which should be located on the passenger side wheel well. Now there maybe one other possability and that might be the fuel pump maybe on it's way out. Well I wish your friend luck and I hope that some or one of the tips I have offered works out
