Acceleration problem

I have an 84 belinetta, with a 2.8l v-6, and this has been bothering me for quite a while now.

Whenever i hit the gas the engine seems like its flooding, yet if i keep my foot down on the pedal, you can hear the rpm's slowly going up and then the engine kicks in and the car surges forward. If i take my foot off the gas during this the car dies. I know crap all about engines, so would this be a problem with the fuel pump or the carb?

I swapped out the fuel filter a few months ago but the problem never went away.
