Unhappy 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

My wrangler 4 wheel drive light will not come on when I shift to 4H. It doesn't seem like it's even in 4 wheel drive. If I shift into 4L the 4 wheel drive does engage, but still without the light. When I shift back up to 4H it still doesn't engage??? Please note that the light doesn't come on in 4L either.

Any suggestions on what I can try and or look at?
Help...

Re: 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

First, I'd:

1) Put the vehicle up on jackstands, engage 4hi and see if all 4 wheels turn when you put it in gear.

2) If front wheels turn, check the 4wd indicator bulb.

If fronts don't turn, then you may have a transfer case problem. Try putting up on jackstands and let us know.

The Front diff may not be engaged by the vacum switch. Once the fork inside engages both axles, the light should come on. The 4x4 light doesn't get engaged by the t-case.

Re: 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

I thought the '94 front axle was permanently engaged (like the 97+) and the connection was made in the T-case?

If I have a trans case problem what type of problem might that be? If I wanted to check the vacuum lines where are they and what should I look for?

Thank You

GO TO THE REAR PASSENGERS SIDE OF THE FRONT AXLE.
THE VACUUM UNIT IS PLUGGED INTO THE AXLE HOUSING THERE. IT HAS A SMALL SKID PLATE.
FOLLOW THE VACUUM LINES.
GOOD IDEA TO REPLACE THEM.
I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO ME DOWN IN A HOLE WITH MY 89'.
LUCKILY I HAD EXTRA VACUUM LINES.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

I had this same problem 4 times. Each time I replaced something in the vacum sytem, another component would fail. I elected to remove the vacum system, and installed a Posi-Lock system. It is a real easy install, and only costs about 100 bucks from Quadratec

Re: 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

I have a '97 Wrangler Sahara with the exact same problem. Would the possible vacuum hose solution be the same for my '97? Thanks!

If the 4x4 light doesn't come on then it's got to be either the bulb or the front fork. I did the posi lock and have never had an issue with 4x4, except for my t-case not wanting to shift into 4x4, but that's a different issue all together. Buy a posi lock and you'll never have to worrie about it again.

97, Your problem isnt vacuum related. 97+ dont have a vacuum motor for the front axle.

Thanks for the response, Ray.
Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Re: 94 Wrangler No 4 Wheel Drive

yeah i have a 1990 yj, when i bought it it had no 4x4. i bought the posi-lock system from a local dealer for $189 two years ago, i don't know if the cost has gone down since. it replaces all the vacuum lines in favor of a manual cable pull. kind of like engaging an OX locker, instead of an ARB. it comes with new connecters to get your 4x4 light working again. good luck
