An 86 should have a one piece seal. You do not have to remove the seal housing to do so. Remove the transmission, then the flexplate. You will see two notches near the seal where you can wedge a screwdriver down into it - then pull outward on the seal and it should come right out. Use the proper size seal driver to install the new one.

Re: 86 305 rear oil seal change

yeah, it is a i piece rubber seal, but it also looks like it is leaking at the seal housing gasket in between it and the block, to get it off do i just loosen the oil pan and unbolt it? thanx for the help so far

Try and use something to drive the seal in evenly such as a large diameter socket.

The large socket idea that Maxwedge stated works just as well as many seal drivers. However, you may not find a socket large enough.

You can do it CAREFULLY with a hammer, lightly tapping it in a criss-cross pattern might work, but keep in mind there is risk that you will kill the seal and have to start over. Do not allow the seal case to distort, even slightly. If you see the smallest dent in it, it's junk and will leak like Rosie O'Donnels... nevermind.

The seal driver or socket is the best, least risky way to go. You can rent a seal driver from Autozone. I think the deposit charge on a seal driver there is like $20 or so - or it was the last time I needed one.

By seal case, I mean the steel part of the seal, not the aluminum adapter on the engine.

It's probably rubber coated, but rubber itself does not have the strength to work alone as a seal. There is a steel frame under the rubber.
