I just want an idea or tip of removing the catalytic converter. I know the 01 civic was made to be an "ultra low emission vehicle". I remove the catalytic converter and install a header and resonator to replace it.
What I can do to "turn off" the MIL (check engine light) and avoid the ECU makes a lean burn to reduce the emissions. |

Re: 01 CIVIC remove catalytic converter
First just a word of advice. Taking off the cat is illegal and serves absolutely no purpose what so ever. Your car will be very loud and not a deep wow that car sounds fast sound. No it will sound raspy. Also you cant replace the cat with a resonator, doesnt really serve the purpose.
Ok next I hope this is an EX model at least. Now if you want to remove the cat you will have to get it done buy a shop a local meineke for instance. They will replace it with a piece of pipe. Your header will connect to your down pipe which is then connected to the cat delete. Also its a good idea to already have an exhaust on your car so this can all be done in one shot cause welding is not cheap. If you want to get rid of the check E light you will need to buy a mil eliminator. You can find them on e-bay for around $25 bucks. Of you can go the 5$ route a make your own with some washers and bolts. |

I definitely agree that it is illegal. If your car is in California, it won't pass smog, meaning no registration, no vehicle in general... But it can serve some purpose if you are full out racing. Typically, no cat means lower back pressure through the exhaust system. In theory, this might result in a few horse power gain at high rpm... note: HIGH RPM! Usually higher rpm horse power gain relates to lower end torque loss without substential tuning. So What do you gain from it? Slower low rpm performance. So in general, you just ended up with a slower accelerating car, that you can't drive on the road due to its legality. So I wouldn't do it. |

I figured this. On the illegality I am OK, because in PR you pay $20 instead of $11 and any car "pass" the emission test. I Know about install this exhaust system without a cat reduce the back pressure, but I drive an LX and is "impossible" get a header and conserve the cat because its on the exhaust manifold. When I install this exhaust system I don't feel the car is any faster. I know this motor is not friendly making hp, but even that it most gain some power. I don't test the car on the 1/4 mile after this. Without any mod, the car was on 16.9s on the 1/4 mile. Do you know facts about any 01+ civic on the 1/4 mile? My mods: *2 inch exhaust system with no cat (just a free flow resonator) *4-1 header (not the one for the VTEC, its a JDM style that end under (or behind) the crankcase *Underdrive crankshaft pulley (CNC made of Al 6061, some 1.5-2 pounds) *AEM adjustable cam gear (not tuned, just advanced 2 degrees) *Short ram intake with 3 inch "Arospeed" filter *NGK iridium spark plugs *H&R suspension springs (black) Thinking about: F1 come-moly flywheel 8.5lbs (stock weights some 16 pounds) Exedy street clutch kit Head milling and porting (I don't knoe how many to mill) and what about Magnaflow cat converter P.S. I know about any recommendations of swap to K-series, but I don't have the budget and have to have fun with this! |
