tranny and oil leak

I have a 91 CV. I purchased used with 106K km and it now has 158K km and the tranny just went. Is it worth repairing ($1,200 - $1,500 CND), or is there something else that needs to be looked at that might have caused the tranny to go prematurely. 158K km seems young for it need rebuilding.
Other issues - the car started to leak 1-2 litres of oil per month about 5 months ago and the engine revs quiet high when idle or in neutral. (if you are driving and take your foot off the accelerator, it will happily go up to 80 kph before leveling off) What is the best way to fix these issues, can they harm the (new) tranny, or is it time to retire our Vicky.
I appreciate any helpful comments.

Re: tranny and oil leak

I would just find another tranny at the wreckers, they are easy to find. What’s it doing? Do any of the gears work? It could also be a torque converter or just low on fluid. As for the engine revving quiet high when at idle or in neutral, it could be a simple vacuum leak. Where is the oil leaking from?

Re: Re: tranny and oil leak

I was just a bit leary at what I might get at a wreckers, not knowing anything about transmissions. The car will get upto about 50 kph before losing power, or if you accelaerate too fast then you lose power and coast until, around 20, the engine seems to engage the transmision. When there is no power, the engine will rev high if you give it gas, but the car won't accelerate. The fluid has been checked by the garage close to where it died, by CAA and CTC. I also checked the level twice a year.
How do I locate a vaccum leak. One garage told me there was no way to know where to start, so they could only charge me an hourly rate, and the time was open ended - I didn't think I could afford to that approach...
Another said a PCV valve, which I could do, just never did.
Thanks for your reply.

Re: Re: Re: tranny and oil leak

Most of the bigger wrecking yards keep good records of their stock and they also warranty their parts. You also have an option of taking the tranny to a tranny shop and have them tested on a machine to make sure that it is working at which point you can have the filter and fluid changed.

To find a vacuum leak, start checking rubber hoses and plastic pipes for cracks, those cars have alot of plastic pipes on the right inner fender.
