Fun Pulling Motors

Hey Everyone,
Just a fun question about motor swaps you've done...I am currently in the middle of a swap because it's cheaper to get another little 1.5 than it is to get it fixed if you have a bad ring...
Now most people use a picker or hoist to pull a motor, but apparently with a 24 of Keith's, a couple of 2x4's and some extension cords that are generally used to string up Christmas lights can work just as well.
Anyone else have interesting methods of pulling Motors?

Yes, it may be, but it worked in lieu of an engine hoist. Maybe you're just jealous because you didn't think of it

sounds like the perfect way to drop a motor on your rad support.

only thing ive ever heard of using for a hoist before other than a hoist, is a tree branch and a winch.

haha brings back memories of good Ol' PA growing up, I've saw that done a few times.

and yeah you are friggen nuts trusting the weight of an engine on just electrical cords.

Oh I should add....that's when I was taking the motor out of the parts car, which now has quite a few extra holes in various body parts thanks to my brother and a pitchfork....When I take the motor out of my Good car and put the new motor in, I'll be using more conventional methods.

wow think if you damage the motor with all the money you spend repairing and replacing parts you could have gotten a engine lift...

^ what he said........if ur going to do it do it right, electrical cords is definently not the way to go....idk just my opinion maybe im wrong its only ur motor...........

Ok look, the way we fastened both the boards and the cords, I guarantee it was just as strong as any chain ever could be. When you wrap a cable around 10 or 15 times, the weight gets distributed evenly amongst each of the small lengths, now you multiply that by 2 and you've got a pretty sturdy rig for lifting. Lest we forget, most of you are currently standing on homes built with wood and that, although not as fancy as steel, seems to get the job done on a fairly regular basis.
The whole point of the post was more to have some FUN, it's called a sense of humor. I wouldn't do something that obviously endangers both myself and my car, or any of its parts.
I honestly can't believe that I'd get a larger response about something such as this as it pertains to your perceptions of my intelligence over someone who posts the tickets or crash photos as a result of street racing. To me, THAT is absolute stupidity.
But hey, for those of you who did enjoy the post, had a good chuckle that's what it was intended to do.

so did you use the electric chords successfully or not ?

still occurs to be stupid to me, i wouldn't trust the weight of my engine on a few electric cables. dont forget when they snap the whip back an can catch you, as well as the engine dropping.

No they actually worked extremely well....It's the same principle as the Golden gate bridge in San Fran. Take small cords and they split the load over each of them individually. What was nice was that because we were looping it, we could strategically place them. Where a chain you'd really only have 2 or 3 anchor points, we tied it up and around so the engine was nice and balanced so it came out really well. Plus it was great for the quads. Trust me, if there was any chance of physical injury I wouldn't have done that, but considering how well it worked, I might actually get some aircraft cable and set up a small rig with the same idea, have 5 or 6 cables available. Maybe even weld on a hook so a picker can hook up to it, that's how well it worked.

that is very very risky. I would not try it. Only other way i have ever pulled a motor was by hand and it was just a block. I would not trust that at all no matter the condition of the car or the motor. I would like to be able to walk and use my hands when im 30.

how much does a block weigh on its own ? im assuming this was literally just the block an no internals.

Ohh well I've picked up and carried a 1.5 across a shop before and it was complete except for the tranny, intake and exhaust manifold.
This was the 1.5 with the Dual port injection so it didn't have as many components as the 1.6 or anything, but this was basically the complete motor and tranny. The starter, dizzy and everything were all on it; we just unhooked all the cables and lines that tied it to the rest of the body and unbolted the exhaust and motor mounts so it was about 400lbs I'd say, maybe a little more. It felt about as much as when we were loading my bro's R6 off of a trailer. So with the motor, he was on one side and I was on the other side. with the boards on our shoulders and the motor suspended in the middle. It was resting on a jack before we unbolted everything. Now this isn't the way I'd suggest installing a motor and we did remove the rad and rad support and pulled it out the front of the car.
