Engagement Problem on 99 XLT

Hi folks,
I have a 99 XLT with 107K miles on it. I noticed that I have no power to the front wheels. I have read most, if not all, of the threads about the transfer case shift motor rebuild on this forum. My question is: Does the vehicle I have use the same transfer case shift motor as the early models? It seems that all of the posts were about the 1st Generation Explorers. By the way what years are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Generations?

Thanks in advance for your shared knowledge! It frees up money that I can put back into the economy without filtering it thru FORD.

Exclamation

It's Me again.

I rebuilt the motor and changed the fluid in the transfer case. No change as far as getting power to the front wheels. If I rap a tow rope around a tree and hook it to the trailer hitch I get rear wheel spin but not front wheel while in either 4Hi or 4Low. I am assuming the dash switch works because the transfer case shifts to low range. I have tried shifting from forward to reverse and turning in circles etc. No luck.

Please any thought would be appreciated.

If you can get the transfer case to go into four wheel low, then the transfer case works. You need to check your front hubs and find out why they are not engaging. They are supposed to be automatically engaging, but its obvious they are not working.

I drive an awd so I don't have your hubs ... don't know much about them.

First gens are the early explorers thru 95, second gens have the newer body style thru 01, and third gens are the newest style, 02 on.

Final post

I finally figured out the problem I was having. The signal to the TOD was fine as was the signal to the t-case coil, but coil is inoperative. I will replace the t-case or rebuild it with the help of my machanic. So long folks. If you want anything from me you can fine me at "Ford Explorer Enthusiasts".
