Rear-Light Warning Light on Dash (99 Camry)

Rear Light Warning Light on 99 Camry is on. Noticed that the sensor is not automatically turning on all of my lights. Headlights go on, but if I want the front and rear running lights to go on, and the dashboard lights to dim, need to manually turn on the headlight switch. All lights work fine that way, including turn signals and brake lights. (But the warning light stays on anyway).

What would cause this. Apparently it is not a burned out bulb. The On/Off switch for the headlights is working properly. Could it be the senser on the passenger dash, or something else?

Check the brake lights and the high mounted stop(brake) light. The brake lights are double filament bulbs and the 2nd filament, the one that goes on when you step on the brakes could be out. In addition, the high mounted brake light is a single filament that only comes on when you apply the brake pedal. You can not see if any of these bulbs are bad unless turn on the headlights and have someone apply the brake pedal while you go to the back of the car and look.

hi i am new in this forum,i own camry 99 le, after going through many forum about the rear waning lights didnt get any answars.same problem i have all lights working fine but still the warning light is on. when i turn on the parking light it comes on and stays on till i turn off the lights, the day time when hit the brakes it comes on abain hit the brakes goes off again and again. checked all wires they seem to be ok.

Another thing to check is that all of the bulbs are the same make. The sensor works off of resistance, if the bulbs are different, this can trigger the light.

Any body who has the brake light indicator on with the high stop light system check inside your trunk, toyota leaves the old socket set up for a inside single stop light set up. You will find the wire and socket pushed up in the deck that holds the speaker.You will find the bulb is burned out. It took me 6 months to find it.
