95 cabrio speed/tach does not work

The dealer in Grand Rapids mi told me it would cost $900 to fix the problem. They indicated it was an internal manual transmission gear. anyone ever have this problem?

It could affect the speedo, but the more common failurewhen both die is the instrument cluster itself.
