96 Voyager Tranny Skipping
Hi, I have a 1996 Voyager w/ a 3.0L engine. It has 176,000 miles on it. It was running great up until yesterday. I was out and about when I stopped at a stop sign. As soon as I was able to go, I pressed the accellerator and it barely was wanting to move foreward. I hit the gas a little more and all of a sudden it made a "clunking" sound, and "popped" into gear. For the rest of my drive it did this every time I stopped. Once it was in gear it seemed to shift smoothly from there on out. Then later, I noticed a high pitched "Whining" sound whenever I would accellerate, and it seemed to skip a bit between gears as the day went on. I drove it straight home and let it sit overnight until morning when I could see better. I checked the fluid, it seems full, and no "Burnt" odor. I drove it a few miles today and noticed tat if I manually put it in 1st, then 2nd, then Drive it seems to go just fine, until I stop again. All in all it still seems pretty strong and runs great. The "whining" sound has me a bit concerned though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you one and all... - Scott

Sounds like it may be the coil pack. Is it a 4 speed tranny?

I am not 100% sure if it is 4 speed or not. I know it does not have Overdrive on the gearshift indicator. Not sure if tht helps or not.
Thanx |

Re: 96 Voyager Tranny Skipping
Seems like it may be the solenoid pack. Is the check engine light on?

Well..I figured I would take the cheapest route first and see what happens. I changed the Tranny filter and replaced the fluid w/ Mopar ATF+3. Took me about 25 minutes, and it seems to shift like a new van!! (For how long, who knows, but its good for the moment!!).

Sounds familiar. Had the same issue with my 96 at 108K. Changed the soleniod pack and has been great since!
