96 5.7 1500 AC problem

I have a 96 1500 with the 5.7 vortec. Its been parked for about 6 months becouse of gas. I have started it up about every 2 weeks and the other day I took it out for a drive and the AC wouldn't cool down. I pulled over to take a look and the compresser was kicking on and off like it should. But the two lines coming in and out of the compresser were very hot so I turned off the AC. Anyone have any idea what this means? It allways worked fine before I parked it.

Re: 96 5.7 1500 AC problem

The compressor shouldn't kick on and off. Your low on refrigerant. Your system only takes 2 cans of r-134, so don't try stuffing in more than 1! You may only need 1/2 to 3/4 of a can. When the system is operating properly, the accumulator should be sweating buckets of water. The accumulator is attached to the firewall and is connected to the compressor from around the back of the motor. Technically speaking, that line should be at around 55 degrees, while the other line that goes to the condensor in front of the radiator should be about 140 degrees. When the A/C is on, the compressor stays on continuously. Maybe on the newer vehicles, it cycles to save energy, but not on your 96 or mine either. I just completed an entire rebuild on my A/C, so I know. Give me a PM if you have any other questions.

Re: 96 5.7 1500 AC problem

You can buy a DIY guage kit with a can of r-134 from the Parts store. Usually the brand is Interdynamics. I believe wal-mart also sells it too. You will be filling the A/C using the port on the compressor that is coming from the accumulator(low pressure side) NOT going to the front of the truck!!!! Your pressure should be in the area of 40-50 psi on the low side. The real test is when the A/C is on, and the compressor is not cycling, you should be getting 55-60 degree air out of your vents. Make sure that your condenser is also as free of bugs and dirt as possible or your A/C will not be as efficient as it should be in removing heat from the interior of your vehicle. -Chris

This might be a stupid question but does it matter if the can is upside down (because of the fluid) or not when you put it in?

Re: 96 5.7 1500 AC problem

Put in enough to where the A/C compressor stays on continuously with the A/C switch pushed in, AND your getting about 55 degree air out the vents.
