subs in spyder. where to mount?

Where might be the best place to mount a sub in a spyder? I bought a 10' JLw6 and I'm going to be building a box...

I was wondering where everyone mounted theirs. I have a cd deck in the hole to the right so thats taken. On the left there is the convertible top manual release... Is it safe to mount the sub box and amp behind the cross bars in the compartment under the top or does it have a chance of getting wet in there? I have wiring for my cd player and top running in there so I didn't think it could get too wet if thats run there but I wasn't sure....

I found a sweet deal on 2 10' subs but I think thats over kill for my car so I sold one off to a friend..

The guy that had them before me said that he kept blowing them out and he thought it was because of two small of a box. Could that be true or was he just putting to much juice threw them and it was clipping and killing the voice coil?

Go to www.imageshack.us and hit "browse", then just select what pic you want to upload. It'll take you to the next page, where you copy the link that says "hotlink to forums". Just paste that link here and hit enter. It'll show up as the pic, not the link.

Re: subs in spyder. where to mount?

Before I had my sub in my trunk I was told it would sound like shit because of the cavity between the trunk and cabin...that and it was a soft top. I put in a 12" and amp and it sounded awesome... I just put it against the wall/crossbars and made a "wedge" to hold it in place.. sounded awesome and never moved/bounced around in the trunk.
I did have trunklid rattle but some dampening helped out alot.

Re: Re: subs in spyder. where to mount?

ok great. I dont' want to loose alot of the space that is left in the trunk. So I think I'm going to build a box to place it up against those bars...

Basically I got a 2 10" JL subs and a JL amp (can't remember the model it's in my garage now...) plus a box for 500 bucks. It didn't seem like such a bad deal to me because the subs were going for 200 a pop on ebay and the amp was going for 250 on ebay... Plus subs were new in box, amp was used..

LMAO... You can't lose alot of space you don't have!!!! The trunks in the spyders aren't even big enough to stash a body!!! he he he.. ok if ya jump on'em they can pack in but still.... lol

One idea that I had when I had the spyder was to take off the wall where the crossbars are, put the top down and see what kind of space was left between the back seat and the bars and the top... possibly put the subs in that cavity so I could still have some trunk space... never got around to doing it though... Maybe look into that if you are going to build a custom box... that and it keeps the subs hidden if someone tries to break into your car and pops the trunk

Re: Re: Re: Re: subs in spyder. where to mount?

thats the exact space I was thinking of. I dunno fi it get's wet back there though at all. There is alot of space even when the top is down...

My trunk is big enough to carry my RC plane and a change of clothing.. Thats it... If I put the sub in the rc plane has to fit somewhere because it fits on the back seat but when I drive iwth the top down it will blow out. planes go figure....

so I got the subs. A great deal from a local guy selling them.. 2 X jl 10w6 10", box that holds both (wont fit in my car), and a jl 500/1 amp all for $500

If anyone is interested in purchasing the box. Make me an offer. better yet if your in an hour from allentown, PA I'll drop it off! (if it's philly you meet me half way I hate the city) I can't use it so it's up for grabs. I can give dimensions later. Note: when I bought it he said he thought it was too small since he was blowing the subs off their outer rings.. I think he may have just had it turned up to high.. It has the jacks on the back for hookup's and all.

Now the next step is to get the line level input's from my rear speakers and get the rca cables to the hidden area in the car. Build a box and install. Pictures, plus how to to follow as always.

I always have my trunk popper locked from the inside, every since smoeone ripped the top and popped it. It's worth the extra effort to use the key.

Re: subs in spyder. where to mount?

I too have a spyder. I am currently building a box to house my 12" Orion subwoofer and one amp. The box will take up the entire trunk because it is a pretty powerful speaker and it will need alot of airspace. I dont think that there is enough airspace to mount it in the roof storage area with my setup. I will hopefully have it completed pretty soon and I will post pictures upon completion.

I just printed off the specs on my subs, and took it to a local audio shope, and they designed a box that fits in the trunk, can be taken out(pain the ass but can be done), and has the airspace required for the subs, and there is still enough room in there for my tennis raquet!

Re: subs in spyder. where to mount?

I take pictures of mine when I get home. It's a pretty slick setup. As I said before not so much a box as a holder. It uses the front wall of the trunk to finish off the box..

Sounds good but something started to rattle the other day when I was playing it. Gotta open it up and make sure nothing came loose. Still need to moun the amp to the wall of the trunk though.
