Question Connecting rods for turbo H22a

My friend needs new rods for his turbo'd H22a, so I'm trying to find some for him. Block has darton sleeves and SRP pistons. They need to be rods that won't require any need for a machine shop, something he can do himself in his living room. Also he'd like to spend under $400-500. I've seen some Eagle ESP H-beam rods for $300 shipped (H-T), and I'm wondering if those would be good to go with (easy in/no machining). Any help is greatly appreciated, he's going to rip the engine apart in the morning.

imo, eagle h-beams are the way to go. I've heard good things about crower rods too; but as to whether or not they need to be machined, no clue.

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

well i hear alot of bad stuff about eagle rods, it all depends on how much power you plan on mkaing and how high you plan on revving

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

I can't seem to find anything at all about machining, maybe he won't have to. He's put a ton of $ into the car in the past 6 months (roll cage, new turbo kit, new LSD, UEGO, ton of other random stuff) and doesn't want to put too much more into it.

I've been reading that the Eagle rods are good for 500hp, so if that's true he should be fine. I'm pretty sure he's looking for around 400whp at most, and will only be reving it to stock rev limiter (I forget, between 7600-8200rpms).

I'll keep searching around. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

yeah hes looking for only 400whp then the eagles are good and should hold. but will he want to go higher in the future ? boost is very addicting. im pretty sure eagle says their limit is 450whp. i wouldnt want to push a rod close to its limit.

Eagle told me 600 HP a few years ago when they were still selling them with the smaller bolts (can't remember what size they were, like 5/16ths or something like that, vs the 3/8ths they sell em with now), so I'm going to venture even more than that with the 3/8 bolts. Eagle Rods and Manley rods are very similar in terms of design and metal used, and they use the exact same bolts. But most people wouldn't flinch at the recommendation to run Manley's in an 800 WHP motor, but people would be nutting themselves if you said that about an Eagle because of a few failures on the small rod bolts a long time ago. Lots of DSM'ers making 600+ wheel on Eagles too. I run Eagles in my new motor and i'd like to make 600 wheel on it, and I am totally comfortable on my eagles.

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

Honestly I don't know if he'll want more power or not. I'm willing to guess he will. It's in a stripped out '95 hatch, so I'd think even 350whp would be enough for him for a while. Thanks for the help everyone.

Yeah earl over at Honda-tech seems to know his stuff. Why don't you shoot him an IM over there and see what he says. He should also be able to tell you if the eagles need to be machined or not.

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

im pretty sure you dont have to machine a rod to get it to fit unless your doing some kind of stroker or somehting like that. or something like the type r pistons on ls rods kind of deal.

also im pretty sure earl uses pauter rods on his race car. there was just a discussion about crower rods and their failures. just based on discussions i would say that you can use eagle just dont throw alot power to them and if you want rods that i havent seen fail, go with pauter

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

Well my friend called either ITUNEDUSA.com or lighteningmotorsports.com and ordered some rods. The guy he talked to on the phone told him to go with Scat rods, and they are better than the Eagle ones. Says he runs them on his 240 and that they're rated for 600whp.

Re: Connecting rods for turbo H22a

ive heard a lot of bad thing about eagle, all the shops ive asked said theyre crap, and when i went to aebs they showed me a lot of bent eagle and some crower rods. they told me theyve seen a lot of eagle rods fail under 400hp. and they use pauter rods on their race cars. theyre about the same price as crower 4340 Steel Billet rods.
