Angry Gas mileage went down the hole.

Ok, I've got the car in my sig. I've been driving it since summer ended. When I first started driving it, I was happily suprised at the gas milage I was getting. I figured it out, and I was getting around 21.9 miles a gallon with my pretty aggressive driving style. That lasted for a while, and I didn't complain. I expected to get 17-18 mpg, but I was at almost 22 with no mods. Now all of a sudden I'm not getting crap for gas. All of a sudden I'm getting like <10 mpg. I have no idea, but it just come up like that. Any ideas of what it could be?

Have you replaced your filters and kept your car in tune? Thats what can bring your gas mileage down. So next time you pass by the auto parts store, you might want to go in and ask for a fuel, air, and oil filter, along with spark plugs and wires. AND if you want to go the extra mile get the BOSCH platinum spark plugs that cost like 5 dollars each.. believe me they'll pay themselves in gas mileage.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

I like ACDelco plugs for best mileage. Just got a set for my Grand Am....damn thing isn't getting the mileage it should.
Not sure about the Bosch plugs. I know they make some cheap ones, and some good ones.

Well you got to get the ones with the 4 prongs or whatever.. Here's a pic

I asked the guy why the hell they cost so much and he said its because they are better with gas mileage and whatnot so yeah, thats better. Of course Bosch sells the real cheap regular ones.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

Sorry man, I wouldn't waste my money on those plugs.

The spark gets kinda scattered with those 4 electrodes. I want a nice centered spark....thus why I like the Delco plugs.

Well they're made like that because they're superior Curtis

Anyway my Monte has been getting not the best gas mileage recently.. I need to replace the damn air and fuel filter.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

Just saying....I wouldn't ever put them in my car. I doubt they are superior. I do think they have a nice marketing ploy going on though.
Good straight spark is the first step.

Delco plugs have a single electrode for a better centered spark. Plus, if you look at the plugs, they have little baby welds to make sure the spark doesn't travel. Great plugs! Although much more expensive than the Bosch Platinums.

Hey Curtis this is offtopic even though we know this is what always happens but anyway. Do some WS.6s not have a Ram air hood? I thought all of them do.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

All of the WS.6 LS1 cars had the hood. It could be swapped though. Of course, I can't see doing that.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

Think about this... If those Bosch plugs were really that great why wouldn't all the major manufacturers be using them to increas gas mileage and car sales????

Guy that owns a local speed shop tells me the same thing Curtis is... You want nice, FAT, centered spark. When you get the multiple prong plugs, the spark is weaker (even though there MAY be more sparks) and doesn't ignite the fuel as quickly and completely as a single prong plug. He uses delco, that's what in my maro too.

Try replacing your O2 sensor.
As for plugs, good old AC Delco's with the proper gap. As mentioned, A single HOT spark will do more for you than 4+ smaller sparks....And Bosch plugs suck donkey balls, had a set in my car and they made it a whole 400 miles before they fouled out..replaced with AC's and never had another problem.

Makes sense. Imagine puting 4 engines in your car and giving each of them 1/4 the gas. Also when you lift weights, you can't lift double with both hands what you could with one.

Re: Gas mileage went down the hole.

Platinum=someone that changes plugs every 100k miles, and wants less then stock performance.

Cheap, Copper motorcrafts/autolites=better performance, but must be changed every 20K miles or so.

Platinum plugs make the engine run hotter then they should, and become more rich...

I worked at autozone, all the dragster late age 50's hot rod guys ALL LAUGHED when they seen them retarded bosch plugs.

Another thing many people don't know is that knn filters LET DIRT in your engines combustion chamber. Get a new kn filter, hold it up to the light..you will see thousands of small pin hole-holes. Yeah it's not to much of a big deal, but not alot of people know that.
