I have a serious problem.. i Just bought this 91 talon awd toady and the main problem is the idle..
I start it, no matter cold or hot, and it goes right to about 2,000 rpm, and then it surges, fluxuating from about 2,000 to 2400, and then to about 1800, back to 2000, etc. etc. its weird and its annoying. There is an exhaust leak somewhere near the downpipe and cat, but thats it, its not really a leak, sounds like there not connected, but i dont see that as any kind of diagnosis for the idle problem.... PLEASE, ALL HELP IS GREALTY APPRECIATED, Thanks, Shawn |

Welcome to the site! Do you have any intentions of replacing the Stock Exhasut with an aftermarket exhasut, or just fixing the problem Now, and thinking about it later?
I dont beleve exhasut leaks cause idle problems, the 02 on the 02 housing is what reads the lean/rich mixture. I would suggest resetting your Bliss screw on the Throttle Body. Or even dissconnecting the battery to reset the ECU. Go onto ebay and buy the 5 dollar DSM service tech shop manuals on CD-ROM, it will help you emenecly. Sorry Im short on time right now. or i could tell you how to do it..

Try manually operating the throttle. See if you can lower the idle by closing the valve. I had the same problem on a 95 Tsi. I took off the throttle body cleaned out the carbon residue which was making it stick then added a spring from canadian tire ($1.50) to the exterior to help close it. Be sure to only use the minimum strength spring you need to close the valve all the way. She hasn't acted up in 3 years. You'll find the gas pedal more sensitive. Especially on and off the throttle, but I find that shifting greatly improves. The engine drops RPMs quicker between shifts. Good luck with your problem.
