first off, don't get a 1998 or newer. I made this mistake. Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful truck and a stellar performer, but is a pain in the a** to lift. That is when Ford started with the independent front suspension, and a lift for it is very expensive - a 4" from superlift is like $1500 and 6" from other companies is even more. You can lift an earlier model for like $400... Also, go for a v-6 version, and you will be able to find many engine and drivetrain mods, although i have seen a few more for the 4.0 liter than the 3.0 (and fewer yet, though still plenty, for the 2.9). Check out www.therangerstation.com for anything else you want to know - check out under the "exterior" section for bulged fenders- (especially budget lifting), www.ford-trucks.com for general info, and http://ranger.racenet.net for a crap load of goodies (lifts, polyurethane, performance, and looks). Drop a line if you got more questions. A ranger is a good choice (good gas milege, good looks, many affordable parts, lots of support, and lots of oppurtunity for improvement (ie v8 swap))

with that year model, the options are endless....
For bulged fenders, i would guess you could gain as much 6" unless you want to make your own stuff. If you check out Bushwacker flares, they are screw on and will go as much as 5" (much cheaper) For the lift, you can get at least 6"-8" from a kit, or do a home made (I've seen a home made with like 15") but a kit is the best way to go. Another good thing about this truck is that is has the TTB (Twin Traction Beam) suspension that get a lot of extra wheel travel Here's a good link for starters http://www.therangerstation.com/Suspension_Kits.html

Re: bulged fenders?lifts?
i ment by raies and flare of the fenders not a lift i am probalbly get a stock wrecked ranger and redo the wrecked parts while puttimg on the fenders but leave the truck at stock ride hight until later with the larger fender flares would i be able to put 33x10" tire in there with stock hight but with no rubbing or bottoming out?

yeah, a 33x10 would be just right for a truck w/ stock suspension and flared (fiberglass) panels - you would still have plenty of space for wheel travel, and the tires wouldn't stick out, but you MAY need to get a litle extra backspacing on the rim...not sure

when you go to buy rims, how do you know how much backspacing they have? Or do you have a few choices? I've been thinking about getting some wider rims, but haven't seen backspacing numbers listed...

Re: bulged fenders?lifts?
wow, its been over a year! i ended up getting a 1986 olds cutlass ciera from my dad (going to sell it as im wanting a pickup.)
im still looking at the ranger and am wondering about the 1980-1992 rangers and prices for lifts. mainly wanting something i can drive around town but have the clearence for offroad trails. (4-6") on therangerstation.com the skyjacker lifts are "recomended" is there anything else needed for the lifts? also what tires can i safely clear with a skyjacker 4" lift? and a 6" lift?

it depends on the lift, but usually has everything except the optional stuff (Tires, rims, gears) - I would suggest getting a new pitman arm if you lift and the kit doesn't include one
Here is the hot link Tire Fitment
