The octane rating only indicates the point of spontaneous ignition under compression. Unless you need it, like if you have a turbo or supercharger, it's a waste.

Gas is expensive as it is, don't blow your $ on something that will do basically nothing for you.

Waste of money, regular is fine for your engine.

More info why high octane is a waste when it's not needed - http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t452830.html

hmm thanks for that link jackasssi, I usually fill up my crx with 89. But I guess if there's not really a difference I'll save alittle money and use 87.

Re: Highest octane i can put in my car?

using an high octane gas when you dont need it is a waste. just use whatever octane your motor calls for.

there is a difference between 87 and 89. octane rating is pretty much its resistance against knock

if your car isnt pinging with 87, no need to go higher. some people like to use a higher grade like 2 times every few months just to clean their fuel system though, but i dont think high-octane race fuel has those detergents.

Re: Highest octane i can put in my car?

i use 94 ultra from sunoco, it burns slower then lower octane gas so i dont have to refuel as often, ok i get maybe another half day of driving to work out of it, but hey it feels better and saves me 2 cents so i can spend it here.

Actually, doesn't higher octane fuel burn faster?

No... octane itself is resistant to combustion... so higher the octane rating, the less combustable the gasoline.

Fun science fact... octane is only the chemical used to judge against how resistant to combustion a chemical like gasoline is... there is no actual octane in gasoline... the different octane ratings are determined by the way the carbon and hydrogen molicules are arranged in the gasoline... things like octane booster do not actually add octane, they only retard the combustion of gasoline a little more.

Using a higher octane gasoline than is what's required of your motor will not save you any gas.
I actually used to be using 93 octane gas in my car, until gas prices hit $3+, at which point I tried using 87 to see how much my milage actually dropped to see if it was worth saving a little bit even losing a little milage...... well to my surprise, my car got 2.5 miles to the gallon better on 87 than on 93.

Re: Highest octane i can put in my car?

that what i found too, my mileage dropped going to a higher octane.

the gas does burn slower which helps to control its combustion so that what high hp guys use to control when it combusts

oh and anything above 100octane is leaded which is bad for cats and o2 sensors
