Paint question

Hi, I just bought a 91 Trooper, dark forest green color. Its been out in the sun a lot and the hood and roof are very faded - in fact 'whiteish'. At first I thought the paint was shot, but as I look at it closely (when I was washing it and it was wet - it looked good) it looks more like the clear coat simply baked off, the underlying paint looks 'ok'. Any suggestions on how to restore the hood? Can i simply buy some clear coat and spray it on? If so, how should I 'prep' the hood? Dave
