GTP and lower grade fuel
The S/C belt for my 98 GTP is currently off at the moment and in need of repair. I figured that I'd work on fuel economy due to the gas prices. At the moment I've been running 89 octane which seems to be ok. Is it safe to run 89 or even 87 octane fuel as long as my supercharger is not currently being used? Is the minimum 92 octane rating due to the fact the engine is Supercharged?

Re: GTP and lower grade fuel
Essentially yes to your last statement. The supercharger pushes so much air into the combustion chamber that in order to get a complete combustion, higher octane fuel is needed.
However, normal compression ratio of the engine is 8.5 to 1 with no boost, so you can get away with 87 with no ill effect. Just keep your foot out of it and keep your boost down. |
