Green or Red Coolent Fluid???

Should I use Dexcool (Red), or regular green stuff?

The opinions I heard through the years is use the Dexcool--the green stuff can cause more interactions and other problems.
BUT change the Dexcool with a drain and rinse every two years. That's what I've been doing.

The green stuff is a false economy. It's not much cheaper and doesn't protect the metals as well. But the problem is leaving it in too long. It's not FIVE year antifreeze...

Are you going to flush the system, or just add some coolant? If it's a '98 it probably came with Dex-cool from the factory. As imida stated, Dex-cool has better and longer lasting properties than the traditional green anti-freeze. Do not mix Dex-cool with green anti-freeze.

Over the last year or so, many companies (Prestone, Peak, etc.) have come out with an extended life antifreeze, that has been given an all makes, all models designation. Hence, you can mix this with any antifreeze, however, if you mix it with the traditional green anti-freeze, it will not retain the same extended life.

If you're doing it yourself...
I ran motor to mix all the crud. Turned it off. Took off lower radiator hose. Let drain and cool for nearly an hour.
Filled with plain hot tap water.
Ran for 8-10 minutes till circulated.
Drained again.
Cooled.
Filled with distilled water.
Ran.
Drained.
Cooled.
Filled with appropriate amount of DexCool.
Had to put some of DexCool into recovery tank because not enough empty volume was left when motor drained.

Added two pellets from GM dealer of antileak that GM recommends after flushing. Bag of 5 is like $1.75 If I recall correctly.

I have never used the block drain. Has anyone else had success finding it and using it to drain block?
