97 Jetta Wierd A/C Problems...HELP!!!
I have a 97 Jetta (2.0, manual trans) with the following problems: When I start my Jetta in the morning after sitting the night, I'll turn on the A/C (compressor kicking in) and it will blow warm. After running for approx. 35-45 minutes, it will begin to blow cold (very cold) and will work great for the rest of the day (as long as the car is running). If I park the car for a little while (4 hours or less), I would usually have to wait a few minutes (after turning on the A/C) before it will blow cold. If I park for a longer time (more than 4 hours or overnight) I will have to wait another 35-45 minutes for the A/C to blow cold again. Here is the kicker: If I start my car in the morning and drive on the freeway (70+ m.p.h.) the A/C will not blow cold until I drive off the freeway (60 m.p.h. or less) no matter how long I'm on the freeway. Apparently if I drive at higher speeds, it affects the A/C when it comes to this problem. If I drive 60 m.p.h. or less I usually wait the 35-45 min. for A/C to blow cold. This has been going on for approx. 1.5 yrs. This past week I replaced the switch in the instrument panel and the relay. This has not resolved the problem. Now I also have the following problems and I am not sure if they are causing the problem or maybe contributing to it.... I have problems with my power windows (which I see, many of you have also) I I was able to repair three windows (2 new regulators - rear and pinched wires in driver window). The rear passenger window is not working (again) I am hoping (by reading your notes) that my problem is the wire harness in the rear door. Also my factory alarm is acting wierd. When I start my car the alarm activates. Sometimes when I try to open a window (while driving) the alarm activates. This usually happens when the car is outside in the heat (live in the south and car sits outside - 90+ degrees). The alarm activates but the car does not shut off. I can continue to drive and when I am ready to get out (open the door) the alarm sets off. This does not happen all the time but its does happen quite often. I am looking to put an after market alarm system to hopefully eliminate this problem. As I said, I am not sure if these problems are contributing to the A/C problem but I thought I would mention them just in case. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance and have fun the your VW's.

Sounds like you have low refrigerant. Have someone with some guages check the pressures on the high and low side.

What were the pressures? Because if the pressures are normal than the ac would blow cold in about 5-10seconds.

Re: 97 Jetta Wierd A/C Problems...HELP!!!
did you ever look into some of the sensors like ambient sensor or ect if ? could be something like that or maybe some blockage in system causing certain conditions to be the only trigger for your system to function.
