sending unit ?

I have a 99 passport, 3.2 auto, 125k that has the dreaded fuel sending unit problem. I have a gas gauge that almost always reads empty and my gas light flashes occaisionally. I haven't noticed any performance issues w/the car, but my gas mileage fluctuates between 15.5-19.5 mpg.

Does the bad sending unit affect anything other than the gauge? Can I harm the vehicle by driving it w/this issue? I don't mind the messed up gauge, but i don't want to mess up the car by driving it w/a known problem.
