turn signals problems help
ok just got back from vacation when the turn signal clicking noise on the inside of the car started clicking by itself without the signal on, a day or two of this went by while not having time to see what the problem was when the multifunction switch started smoking, eventually a couple days later the clicking noise stop entirely and now i have to manualy push down and up to make the signals flash on the outside, i tryed replacing the hazard switch that is located in the middle of the dash at the dealership but it didn't work, then bought a new multifuncation switch installed it and it didn't help so now I am wondering if a put that new hazard switch back in along with the multifunction switch without a definate answer do you think it will start working again or is there a short somewhere??? anybody else have this problem?????

Thought I might piggyback on your thread, dollarbill. I am having electrical issues too, starting with the turn signal. I turned my car on today and the ABS light is on, the turn signals don't work at all, and my brake lights are out. I too have a the clicking sound from the ABS system under the hood (I think) but just for a couple of seconds after I start the car.
Sounds like these could be related problems. Anyone help? |

Both say your turn signals don't work, have either of you tried the flasher? they are cheap and a good place to start. My turn signals would come on but not flash, that was my problem, maybe its yours. My car 95 GA had 2 flasher units, one for the 4-ways, and one for the turn signals, if one works but the other one doesn't turn on the one that works, and replace the other one. they are usually located down by the steering column, mine had a nice door to open to get to it easily.
One of you said you don't have brake lights, I assume you mean the 2 of the 3 brake lights? Your 3rd light should still work, I have heard of it being a turn signal switch problem if the 2 brake lights don't work. No idea why they would run the wires thru that, but it has been done. Always start with checking the fuses & bulbs, but if thats not your problem then it may be your turn signal switch. If not that then the only other thing I can think of would be the brake switch that activates the brake lights (usually mounted on the column by the brake pedal) usually inexpensive compared to a turn signal switch. hope some of the info will help you out! |

Re: turn signals problems help
Have you ever had the steering wheel off newer GA's gmack221? I havent ever either, but I heard you need to disconnect the battery so the air bags dont go off.
And Deft One , You say you here clicking under the hood and the ABS lights on? If this is true the Abs hydraulic control unit under the battery makes noise, if somethings wrong with the ABS system. Or it could be the EBCM which is located just on the left inside fender, am I right here Gmack221 or GTP dad? |

Yes I have had the steering wheel off my 95 Grand Am, yes you should disconnect the battery and pull the air bag fuses before messing with it. Its not that much more work to do it that way, and im sure you know how to re-program the radio stations. the new columns are SO much easier to work on then the old ones were!
If it truely is his abs clicking (and not the flasher) it could be related to turn signal switch, if the brake indicator wire does run thru the switch. I haven't had time to look at the wiring diagram to see if it does on this car yet. maybe someone else has one handy and could chime in here. |

I'm having a similar issue. Ever so often I hear a clicking noise twice the normal turn siginal rate. Once I turn the turn siginal or 4-way on, the click moves to the normal rate. This comes and goes in a random pattern. Any thought?
