Unhappy 92 4.0L Overheating like crazy

Ok, so my Jeep has been acting fine for a while. It leaks oil, but I put oil in it whenever it gets low. So I get pretty good reliability from it until yesterday.

Yesterday I drive to the gas station that's about 1 mile away, and I have to sit there for like 10 minutes because this woman parks beside the pump and shops inside the store. So it pisses me off, but I don't think anything over it until I got home. I get home, and realize that the temp gauge is is the red. So I turn it off, and the Jeep is hissing and there's a liquid coming out of it at a pretty steady rate. I'm not sure what it was.

So I figure that I just sit still too long, and it overheated. I checked teh levels for the oil and coolant, and topped them off. Then I tried to go to work and got about a mile out of it again, with the same results. The fans kick in, but the engine isn't cooling down.

Any idea what it is?

Sounds like could be a few things.
1st - when you topped off the water, it may be vapor locked - you need to let the engine warm up, turn on the heater to max and add water or coolant slowly. You should see success when it is returning back to the reservoir and is mixed.

2nd - The upper or lower radiator hoses is leaking - easy to spot.

3rd - The waterpump is leaking or seized - easy to see and hear if seized.

or:

The water coolant reservoir has sprung a leak - easy to see.

Good luck

So is the mechanical fan turning? Also, you say the electric fan is coming on, is it staying on?

At one point, I had a problem where the electric fan would come on, but as it began to heat up, it would stop turning, causing the vehicle to overheat.

test the your clutch fan, with the engine off spin the fan by hand, now, start the jeep and let it get warmed up and then shut it down. Try spinning the fan again, it should be harder to turn. If there is no difference from before the clutch most likey is not working and the fan is not turning enough.

Hey Dude,

If both your fans are operating:

First of all you need to check and change is your thermostat. Make sure the it is opening.

Secondly, check to make sure that you have fluid flow in your radiator.

Thirdly, check the transmission level. trannys are cooled from the radiator and even sitting in idle get warm.

If these are not the solutions I would have the system flushed out.

Keep me posted.
