Question Exhaust Question??

I was thinking about unhooking the muffler on my car. I was wondering if this could have any mechanical side affects besides being loud? Also will removing the muffler completely increase or decrease horsepower?

No it won't have any negative side effects besides the sound. You might be able to feel a slight pick up at higher rpms. But either way the loudness will be the only real difference..

Ok I unhooked the exhaust at the muffler. It sounds loud, but not bad. I noticed that the rear of my car, mostly by the gas tank and underside of the rear of the car is getting really hot. I was wondering if this could cause any problems. You know like melting hoses, or even cause the gas tank to explode. I didn't remove the muffler because i want the car to appear stock, I just unbolted where the muffler connects to the main pipe. Then I put the main pipe on top of the pipe coming from the muffler, so it is pointing slightly upwards.

Re: Exhaust Question??

Yes, you could melt things back there, you could also gas out your back seat passengers if you're not careful

Re: Exhaust Question??

Carbon monoxide will seep into your car when you are stopped anywhere with your car running, and that is not a good thing.

Re: Exhaust Question??

If you want your car to have a loud exhaust just buy a glass pack or something cheap.

If you want to have a louder exhaust but still the "stock" appearence just have a shop make you some 2.5" pipes and hollow out your regular muffler and maybe take off that cat too

OK Thanks. I hooked back up my exhaust. I really don't care about the exhaust appearing stock, but i just don't want to buy a new muffler right now. Also how would I hollow out my muffler?

Re: Exhaust Question??

no, an exhaust will not give you 25 hp

yes, gutting the cat will foul the downstream O2 sensor and not improve performance a whole lot even if it didn't mess with the sensors.
