Cavalier VS Protege - my 1st race

First off let my start off by expressing my sympathy for the death of Andy. I never got the chance to talk to him on AF but what happened was still tragic and it saddens me to read about these types of situations.

Now, about my race - I don't drive anything sporty and do not consider my car to be fast by any means. It's a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe, 5-speed manual. Yea it's peppy, but definetly no red light racer by any means. Anyways, my friend has a 2002 Mazda Protege 5-speed which he considers "fast" lol. Everytime I ride with him he drives it as if it were a Porsche or something. It really is annoying sometimes lol.

Well one late night we were both driving our cars home from a friends house and we pulled up to a red light. There was no traffic anywhere since it was like 2am. He rolls down his window and says "Hey, you wanna go?" so I figure what the heck let's see what the mighty Cavalier can do LOL and give him the nod. Once the light hit green we both launch hard. I get him off the line by about half a car length, then in second I have a whole car length on him, in third I pass in front of him and by this time I have a great visual of him in my rear-view mirror lol. I was pretty surprised that I destroyed him this bad! Our cars are not that far apart in performance - 140 horsepower/150 lb-ft of torque VS. 130 horsepower/135 lb-ft torque. I didn't think that 10 horses and 15 lb-ft of torque can make that big of a difference. Also, he is a very good @ driving stick...

So, I get to another red light and he pulls up next to me. I roll down my window and say "What the heck happened there man?" LOL his excuse was "Man you caught me off guard I wasn't prepared, lets go again!". I figured sure why the hell not. Once the light hit green we both nail it, I had a slight lead in first. He caught up to my front fender by 2nd, then by the time i got into 3rd I pulled about 1 1/2 car lengths on him. We pulled up next to eachother at another light and he says "Well, you do have like 20 more horsepower than me, right?" I just said "yeah, something like that" lol we agreed it was a good race and went our seperate ways. Needless to say he has not tried racing me since then haha.

That concludes my street race story, it shouldn't be anything to brag about since I drive a bone stock Cavalier LOL but it was still fun and I was suprised with my car's performance.

nice kill, as long as you have fun it really doesnt matter how slow or fast the race was.

Thanks. BTW I like your ride. My dad had a '98 Cavalier Z24 automatic and it was fairly quick. I liked the car a lot. Have you taken yours to the drag strip?

Hey congrats on your first kill. Just like Jayson said, as long as you had fun, that's all that matters.

Congrats on your first kill, just got my own recently. I'm glad to see that theres someone else in the forum running bone stock, lol. Keep up the good work, nice to see a fellow stock GM beat something.
