Re: please help! with timing belts

Assuming your working on the 3.5L engine `94 to 97 (I think this is the only one that has a belt pre 1997? after that I don't know)... Make sure the engine is @ #1 TDC. You'll see the marks on the block for both Cams (Upper Left and Right) and the Crank (Bottom centre) Align all the marks on the cams and crank to these marks before removing the tensioner!!!!!!! Then don't turn anything. Serious damage can occur if this is not followed!

Facing the engine on the lower left and slightly above the crank you will see the tensioner. It's pushing on the tensioner pulley which tensions the timeing belt. Below it is the tensioner. You need to unbolt it. That will relax your belt enough to get it off. To reset the tensioner before re-installing you need to clamp it in a big C Clamp or perferably a Vice. It takes quite a bit to compress it. When I did mine it actually bent the allen wrench lol.

Once compressed you can insert a small allen wrench into the hole to lock it. You can rebolt it on the engine.. make sure your allen wrench is sticking out the front or you will not be able to remove it when the time comes.

Install the water pump

Install your new belt starting from the Crank and work counter clockwise Once you have it on.. and double check your marks... pull the allen key out.

Re: please help! with timing belts

I strongly suggest getting a Haynes or Chiltons manual for the car, while CobraCDN's description is pretty accurate, the manuals go into good detail and illustrate what you are looking for with some nice clear photos of the job, well worth the investment to have with you while doing the job.
