'96 K1500 - Won't go into gear.

1996 chev k1500 4X4 (elect. transfer case)

Trying to shift from 4L to 4H. Would not go to 4H or 2H, stuck in 4L. Tried many times. Finally, at a complete stop, it wouldn't go into gear at all. No reverse, no drive, nothing. The 4H lite is flashing and a relay (attached to the steering column under dash) is "clicking". The relay "clicks" for a few moments, then quits. If I disconnect one of the wire connections to the transfer case, the relay quits clicking immediately. If I jack up the front end, the front wheels spin freely, as well as the rear wheels. If I shift thru the gears I sense that it's trying to go into gear and when I put it into park I can hear the tranny "grind" to a halt. The shifter moves thru all the gears but when I put it into park, it still free wheels. A local shop suggested that a "snap ring" may have broke in the tail shaft and another shop said maybe it was one of the actuators. ????????????
Help?

New info. It sat for a few hours and now it moves, in 4L. Tranny shifts R,N & D, but still won't come out of 4L. And...It was pretty hot here today. (FYI)
