ZC swap gone wrong
A couple of days ago i finished a DOHC ZC swap into my cousin's 88 CRX DX. I had already peformed an MPFI swap on it about a month ago. We got the motor off a private seller who said the car it came out of before wouldnt stay on for more that a few minutes (he said it was a wiring issue). Well we dropped it in and it started but it ran really crappy and we got a code 9 and a code 10. The day after we worked on it a little more and got rid of the codes. Code 9 was a combination of bad cam timing and shorted wires on the cylinder sensor. Code 10 went away after we replaced the IAT sensor. We took it around the block but it bogged and backfired at anything other than part thorttle. Its been this way for a couple of days now. Its really slow and it kind of hesitates when you give it gas. Cam timing is dead on. Compression is 180 psi all the way across. There are no codes and the wiring is tip-top. It sounds really loud out of the intake when you gas it, kinda like a Subaru. We swapped out the injectors, FPR, plugs, EAVC, TB, IAT sensor, and we tried two different ECUs (PM6 and PG7). Valves are adjusted properly. I cant think of anything else to try. Any ideas?

Dizzy rotor is on good, and cam timing seems to still be dead on. Im thinking its the timing. Is there any way to find TDC other than matching up the pulley marks? Our ZC came without the timing belt cover so i had to stick a long extension in the #1 spark plug hole until i hit TDC. What is the correct way to find TDC without using the timing marks?

Re: ZC swap gone wrong
You can find the TDC marks on the block itself. There should be a score across the top of the water pump gear that will line up with the mark on the block. That will ensure you have TDC on the crank. Then you line up the cam gears across the top of the head and put the belt on. You might have it too far retarded (timing) and that is causing the backfiring...

Well i went back and found out the cam timing was 180 degrees off. Now i know for sure that the cam timing is dead on. It still lags and bogs when i take it around the block. It seems to run better with the ignition timing a bit retarded. It now backfires out of the intake when its under load. Any more ideas?

u sure that theres still 180 at every cylinder? check it again for shits and giggles. If your timing has been skippin around, maybe you bent a valve. if its backfiring out of the intake, the valve could be open when its not supposed to be. So heres a link to how to do the timing out of the manual.

Sorry about bringing back an old thread, i just thought this might help someone someday...
After about 5 days of troubleshooting, we found the problem to be the firing order. The #1 and #4 spark plug wires were switched around, causing the engine to run on essentially two cylinders. After a quick spin around the block, the cat was glowing cherry red, probably from all the unburned fuel collecting in there. It was kind of emberassing because it was my cousin who found the problem. I guess the order on the dizzy cap is a bit different on the ZCs than the SOHCs im used to. It hauls ass now. Hopefully this helps someone.

Re: ZC swap gone wrong
i actually have almost a similar problem. I start in the morn im good, but after i shutdown for an hour or so the engine idle drops so low it almost stops but then jumps up then drops back down, it does this for a couple seconds then may rise back up till it levels out where it should, or it will jump up and down then stop. whats the deal?
