No VTEC?

Yesterday I test drove a 2000 Honda Prelude Type SH. The guy that own the Prelude said that he hasn't driven it for a year until a couple days ago. While I was driving I hit the 5,000 RPM range and noticed no change in engine notice or speed. The car felt way slower than my old 96 LS 5 speed. I m wondering if VTEC is working or not. I asked the guy about the VTEC, but he said that he doesn't shift past 3,000 RPM so he wouldn't know. If theres something wrong what could be wrong with the VTEC? The Prelude I test drove had 48K and the only after market part he had was a Ricer exhaust which was loud like a weedwacker on crack.

Re: No VTEC?

was the engine warmed up? vtec won't engage on a cold engine. just a thought. also on a 5th gen, the engagement point is at 5200rpm

yeah that sounds about right. VTEC kicks in around 5000-5100 RPM for me.

Re: No VTEC?

The engine was warm it was driven earlier by someone else. I read from somewhere that it might be because the car was low in oil or because the oil was to old so the VTEC won't engage. Do you guys think that might be the problem? I really want to get that Lude but I don't know about the VTEC. I could ask him for a oil change but I don't know. What's the Vtec silanoid?

Re: No VTEC?

Tell the guy to bring the car to a mechanic and get the WHOLE car checked out before you buy it... If VTEC works after that, then you know it was a small problem.

Re: No VTEC?

does the vtec engage at different r's on the base and sh, because i'm pretty sure that the vtec doesn't engage on a base until 6500 r's. maybe they're different, i don't know, just wondering.

Re: No VTEC?

No, VTEC engages at 5200 rpm on the base and the SH. If you hit VTEC at 6500 there would be no time from that to redline...it would be pointless.

Re: No VTEC?

i know, that's what i thought when my i heard that. then, why would you get a vtec controller and set it at 5500 when the vtec already kicks in at 5200. i've seen many people online that have their vtec controller set at 5500. i don't know. either way, i have a jdm p13 so it doesn't matter to me.

Re: No VTEC?

VTEC controllers are junk unless youve seriously altered the powerband of your engine. Honda spent hunderds of hours finding the best spot for the VTEC to engage, so it offers the greatest power. So when people think they have their VTEC set at a different RPM they are basically trying to say they know more that Honda. BULLSHIT. VTEC Controller=Waste of Money/Trash.

okay. i was just asking a simple question. no need to get all hostile. calm down. it'll be okay. i promise. there, now isn't that better. but i still have one more question for you hondaracing: why, when my vtec wire was disconnected, did my car act like it had a rev limiter on it at 6500 rpms??? and why, when i asked the honda technicians about vtec engagement, did they say it was 6500??? okay, so that's two questions, but what the hell, why don't you give them a shot huh??? thanks for the info.

Alright first of all, I wasn't being hostile, I was just sharing my information in a way that I feel strongly states my opinion. I'm not positive about why your car "had a rev limter at 6500" Maybe the ECU was throwing a code or something, but your Honda technician was wrong about VTEC engagement. Maybe he was thinking of the S2000's VTEC engagement RPM, I'm quite sure it engages at 6500. Either way, your Honda technician was poorly mistaken.

Re: No VTEC?

i was just kidding about the hostile remark. i know, it's hard to convey sarcasm while typing, but that's what it was. but you also have to keep in mind that honda, as smart as they are, they can't just focus on strictly performance for their motors, they also have to figure in economy and emissions, and all sorts of other shit into building their cars for the market. but the thing i wonder is, has anyone ever bought a vtec controller and just used it to change vtec engagement, (not anything else) and seen positive hp and tq results??? i just think that would be interesting to find out. so if anyone has ever done or seen this before, please, enlighten me. that's all for now. and hondaracing, HONDA FUC*** RULES!!!!! just to get that out of the way and so you don't get confused. happy reading.

Re: No VTEC?

Yes, emmisions were a big deal for the engineers, but at the same time they found the best suited spot for the changeover that allowed efficiency, max hp&tq, and a good powerband. As far as VTEC controllers being used to gain hp, Its probably been done, but at what exspence to the powerband and emisions. Personally I wouldnt fuck with perfection. And yes, Honda does happen to kick major ass. No confusion there.
