Installing Shocks on 99 Cherokee Sport
I'm about to replace all four shock on my 1999 Cherokee Sport 4WD. I've decided to upgrade to the Edelbrock IAS shocks. I live in CA, so I don't think rusty bolts will be an issue... What I am looking for are some "from experience" pointers that might help this job go smoothly? Such things as: Do I need to lift the truck from the frame so the suspension is fully extended? From what I've heard, this is a fairly straight forward process, however I really haven't wrenched much on this Jeep as I've only had it a year.
Thanks, Jim |

Well since you don't have any rusty bolts it's a pretty simple job. When I started on mine I jacked it up and put jack stands under it to keep it really steady. I put the shocks on, I left the plastic around them until I had it bolted in at the top. When you cut it all you have to do is position it to where you want it and it just drops right in. But those bolts are in there pretty tight I would spray something on there a day before to loosen them up just to be sure. You should have no problems just be sure not to break a bolt off... It will take longer to fix that than to do all the shocks. Just post more if you have any problems

Ahhh... Ok if you don't have a drill you're going to need one. You'll also need a drill bit that you can drill the hole out with. Try to find one that is right about the size of the bolt excluding the threads maybe a little smaller. You'll definitely need to go and buy an easy out (bolt extractor) . Don't get thrifty and buy a "value pack" find some really nice ones even if you will only need them once they'll pay off. While you are at the store buy some PB-Blaster. When you get everything you could drill a small hole all the way through. When you finish that spray some PB-Blaster in there and let it sit for about 6 hours. It would be nice to do it and let it sit all night. Try to make the hole as big as you can and try to get the biggest easy out you can get in there. Tap it with a hammer to set it. You could use a crescent wrench to fit the easy out. Start twisting nice and slow for it to hold tight and make its way in. If you've never done this before it may take a while be calm and cool you just have to work at it.

Ted, The easiest way might be to let a professional do it because it's their job and it's nothing new to them. If you are feeling confident in yourself and your knowledge of automobiles I say go ahead and try it. |
